there is a hard line tapped into my left exhaust manifold. is this what the ecm/pcm uses for egt, and if so is there a way for me to tap into this for an aftermaret egt gauge? I'm not crazy about tapping a hole in there w/o removing it.

The PCM does not monitor EGT, if the hard line you are talking about is toward the front of the left hand exhaust manifold, it is for the EP sensor and no do not tap into it.
It is not a problem to drill and tap the exhaust manifold to install your A/M EGT probe.
Everyone does it...driver's side manifold and towards the rear. Only place you can get a drill easily anyway. If you are afraid of shavings, after you drill the hole, start truck and let shavings blow out the hole. Be SURE you drill the correct size hole!!!! Oh yeah, buy a new, good tap!
i actually drilled my passenger side near the rear, and you can drill the hole with the engine idling, this will keep the shavings outside the manifold.
