im having an electrical problem i have a brand new altenator a brand new voltage regulator and a brand new batt. i can start my truck up and ive got power to the alternator from the batt but i can take the pos batt cable off and the truck dies the other 2 wires connected to the altenator both run to the voltage regulator. there is one other wire a green one that comes from the voltage reg and goes into a wireing harness from there im not sure any sugestions
i have an 85 f150 the problem seems to be intermitten right now put a new alter new voltage reg and a new batt checked all wireing to the best of my ability and took the pos wire off wen running and it died now i turn it on and do the same thing and it stays running while running use a volt ohm meter and it says 12.80 when ideling and almost 14.00 when rpm are at about 3000 so any help is good just wondering what it could be
franklin i got it to work i changed the alten the voltage reg and the batt then i ran new wire from the altenator to the bat and new wire from the voltage reg to the alten now wen its ideling im gettin 12.77 volts out put and at about 25 to 2800 rpm im gettin about 13.45 volts out put hopefuly thats about right i kinda think that my 85 wireing is starting to go may have to get a whole new wireing harness for the entire truck and be done with it last fall had an ignition prob and it was a faulty wire but i thank you for the responce
That sounds a little low, but try it and see if it does ok. If the battery seems like it's low on charge, you can try running a ground wire from one of the regulator bolts, to the engine block. These old trucks get rusty sometimes and the grounds suffer.
