help electrical

hey i got in my 85 f150 today started fine ran around a bit and turned it off got back in it later tried to start it and nothing put a charger on it on 60 amp start and started right up thought it might be the batt bought a new batt and it starts right up but if i go take the pos batt cable off it dies imediatly put it back on starts right up so then i bought a new alternator and put it on and still the same problem now the only think in the line that i can think of is the external voltage regulator if any suggestions please leave posts thanks

Try to get out of the habit of pulling the battery cable off with the truck running. It can easily burn the ignition module or other electronics up in the truck. The best way to check to see if it's charging is with a voltmeter.

What I would do next is with the engine off, take a meter and see if you have battery voltage on the large output terminal on the back of the alternator. If you don't, then there is probably a fusible link burnt out in that wire to the alternator.

thanks for the info ill try that as soon as i can just funny i was bragging on the truck yesterday and now it goes abe **** on me, lol just my luck though

Is this the correct terminal?

I'm having charging problems too. I've not pulled a cable with the engine running, but I have removed my jumper box with a weak battery and it cut off when I did. I pulled the wire, engine off, and had 0 volts on it. I started the engine with the wire off, 0 volts on the wire, .5 volts on the alternator stud.

Bad alternator? Pull it and let Advance test it?

The large output wire that goes to the alternator, whether it's hooked to the alternator or not, should have battery voltage on it, because it's hooked to the battery +. If you get no voltage on this wire, that usually means the fusible link in this wire is burnt out.

Yep, that's what happens almost every time we brag about something or other. Gotta be some variant of Murphy's Law.

I had the same problem with a car several years ago. The engine would turn over at the normal speed when the engine was cold. It would not turn over if the engine was hot. If I waited about 20 minutes and let it cool, it would start. The starter was bad and wouldn't work when it was hot. I changed the starter and never had that problem again.
