this may have been done but im not finding it i just bought a 1970 f100 i think it may have a 302 but im not sure cause the intake manifold seems a little large to be a 302 but it has the right firing order also the tag on the valve cover is missing any ideas how to tell what engine i have? any help would be appreciated thanks
I believe there were two V8s offered that year, the 302 and FE 360/390. The 302s intake is pretty narrow and the FE is pretty wide, and goes under the valve cover about an inch.
If someone put a 351W in it, the intake is a bit wider then 302(by inch or two), but like John says, if the intake is part of the head(under valvecover) then it's an FE.
cool thanks guys is there any way to tell if the difference for the FE's in the vin? it seems that the 390 is a stroked 360 or is it the other way around? Thanks for your help I used to have a 67 mustang with a 347 that i built for it but i dont know much about the F100 series trucks. also if anyone has any ideas why my turn signals come on but dont blink i'd greatly appreciate a suggestion or 2. Thanks again
The FE is hard to distinguish for size as they all look the same and have same casting numbers.
Check under the dash for blinker relay, usually clipped on side of column support brackets. Is it both sides or only one? Could also be a burnt bulb also, but I suppose you checked those already.
You can tell what the truck was originally equipped with from the VIN. The 4th digit is what you're looking for:
302 cid, 8-cyl. G
390 cid, 8-cyl. H
360 cid, 8-cyl. Y
The first three identify the model, yours (like mine) should be F10. So mine starts F10Y meaning an F-100 built with a 360.
Of course, there's no telling what's happened in the last 37 years unless you're the sole owner, someone could have dropped another motor in it.
