I am thinking of complete removel of the air pump, egr valve and all the rest of emission parts on my 84 302. What problems should i look for with tunning engine.
I'd keep the EGR. It'll keep the engine from pinging under load. If you do take it off, you'll have to richen up the mixture a bit. As for the air pump, I'd go ahead and take it off if you don't have a visual smog inspection in you area. It should make the engine breathe a little easier because you aren't trying to make it breathe through all those tubes and vacuum lines.
I took off all the smog crap off my 460 and it runs a lot better. The risk I run though is that if I have to get it inspected, (I live in an area that doesn't have smog checks), I'm gonna fail. I'm not sure how much HP you'll gain from taking the smog stuff off, but a good tune-up, better intake, hotter ignition and dual exhaust will make your truck run cleaner than it does with malfunctioning or even questionable smog devices.

you guys are lucky to be able to touch any of that stuff. here in pima co. az. they inspect every thing - and i mean every thing. i have been failed for as little as a vacuum hose being lose. they shake ya down really good here. maybe someday they will start taking things apart to inpsect um, i can't beleive this crap here.
I used to live in Nevada, Reno to be exact, and they would go over my truck with a fine tooth comb! I swear by all that is sacred to me, from the time I was 16 until the time I moved here to Montana 3 years ago when I turned 30, that I never had a truck of mine pass a smog check the first time out with the exception of a 78 GMC 3/4 ton I bought that had a 350 and zero smog equipment. That truck taught me that a properly tuned engine can run far more efficient then a smog-device laiden engine can run.
I'm the kind of guy that takes very good care of my vehicles, but I would ALWAYS have to get the test done, fail, put about $150 or so into some kind of repair, take the test again, just pass by the squeak of my teeth, and then register my truck. I hated registering my truck every year.
Looks like I will be following advice from here and from others to git rid of air pump and all related hardware. Keep the smog pump in working condition.
Hey big hoss? How much did you notice on the 460? I have a 90 efi 460 and was thing of junking the insane amount of restricted hoses! Was also going to throw on a magna flow and k&n to boot! Was it worth the hassle?
In my opinion it was definetly worth taking off the smog pump and all the related smog hoses. But I have a carb'd engine and those older smog parts and miles upon miles of vacuum lines and tubes are, IMO, prone to making your truck run like poo even when it's tuned up right. Where I think it'll hurt you is the fact that your truck's ECM works off of all the different smog devices. If even one device is missing or messed up, it throws the computer off and puts the engine in "limp" mode.
Late model smog devices are a lot better at keeping your engine running at it's best even though there are a lot of hoses. The ECM takes all the info and makes the engine purr. You can dress it all up, but I'd think twice about taking smog stuff off of an EFI controlled engine. You might end up hurting your efforts rather than helping them.

Can someone tell me what the difference is between an air pump and a smog pump? Ive always thought that they were the same thing.
After rereading my post I foung i really goofed I ment to say air pump will have to go but I will keep egr set up. This is or should be easy with 84 carb engine.Soory fellows.
i also have a 86 carbed 351 and would like to remove all the smog related hoses from under the hood, but keep the EGR. i live in ontario, canada and we don't have smog tests here.
so how do i go about starting to remove the smog pump and all the vacuum hoses???
I hope to have time Saterday to get my smog pump off.Looks like a lot of vac hoses going different places. All ready have new free flow exhaust and no more cats.Truck seems to have more pep for sure.
