I want a PSD

Well, I'm a truck guy, I've owned one since I could drive, but they have only been 1/2 tons.

The other day my woman got to drive her moms old F150 for a while (extended cab long box) and realized how much she liked driving big trucks as opposed to her chev lumina.

So I have decided that in the next couple of years I want to look for a SD with a powerstroke diesel in it. I love the turbo whine as it spools up, I love the massive amounts of torque. I love the fuel economy over gasoline, and I love driving a big ford truck.

I would feel bad having a big truck and not having a need to justify its purchase, but I believe the enjoyment I would get out of driving one is enough, so anyway...

What are things to look for? Good years for the psd, and bad years? Should I be looking for a 6.0 or a 7.3? What SD should I look for F250 or F350. I would like a crew cab short box. What are trouble signs to look out for. I'm not going to jump out and buy one tomorrow, but in the near future who knows?

Unless you plan on needing to haul heavy loads or tow anything large, you won't need the F350, so stick with an F250. The rest is a matter of opinion. Some love the 6.0, some hate it. Same goes for the 7.3. In a few years, I would suggest going for a 6.0 as it will be easier to locate one that has been well maintained. 05-07s seem to be the most reliable as of now, but that may just seem that way because they are newer.

Hope to see you join the "larger" side in the future!

You want one --- that's reason enough.

Well, I wanted one since I drove in my friend's lifted PSD 7.3L. I thought it was awesome! So like three years went by and I decided to go with the diesel - not only for how awesome the torque is - but because the mileage doesnt get too bad when you lift it - which I planned on doing from the start...

I hardly ever tow with the thing!

Buy one and join us on the "black smoke" side!! ...

you won't regret it - as you can tell from my username, I was a previous "gasser" and although I've had some issues, I'm an oiler forever...for one thing, I just love the smell of diesel as well!...but I grew up on a farm...

I recommend against getting a 6.0 PSD if you don't tow or haul heavy loads or have a long commute. IMO: Frequent short trips are bad for this engine, it causes problems with the variable turbo vanes and the EGR system.

I thought I read here a while ago (might have been a few years before I joined) that theres actually no difference between the 2 as far as towing and load capacity its just for how they are registerd......is that true?

Yeah, I was looking for an F250, but then I had seen the only differences are the badges and a few other small things. like the F350 has 4" blocks instead of 2" blocks. So I figured that I might as well look for a 350 because it basically is the same as the 250 but sits up higher.

I think the 7.3 has proven itself over time that it is a bullet proof motor, but every engine has its drawbacks. Historically I think the problems are cheaper on the 7.3's then the 6.0's IF you get a bad one, there are a million variables....but both motors are great! A good used 7.3 truck is getting harder to find. I know I will keep mine until the wheels fall off. Something to consider about the F250/F350 debate you're having is some states require a F350 to be registered as commercial. Not sure where you live, but look into that before buying one. I've owned 2 F250's now, and haven't had a problem towing anything yet! Unless you plan on towing a ton of weight, the F250 can handle the job! Good luck and respond when you get one.

No, IIRC the F-350 SRW has a different rear axle, block and springs and can haul about 2000 pounds more.

Don't know how much you want to spend, but in 2-3 years there should be a good availability of used '08's with the 6.4 PSD. None of us are getting any younger and neither are our trucks.

I gave up my 05 f350 v-8 and regret it every day. I want to buy a crew 6.4 someday but we will see. The one thing I will tell you is in NJ, I paid a good bit more for the f350 because of the weight class of the vehicle. You may want to look into that end of it also. Good luck!!! Let me know if you talk your wife into it, as i need to work on mine also(wife that is). She still likes the expy's.

Redford, this took a 30 second search ...

About the only way to get the real FACTS are to look at Ford's spec sheets for the '05 F250 and F350 and do your own comparison.

I BELIEVE that in '05, the difference was the rear leaf spring blocks (not the springs themselves) and the spline count for the rear axles.

The F350 sits up higher than an F250 with the same load because the blocks in the rear are almost 2 inches higher.

All Superduty's have solid front axles.

2002 or so and up have Dana 60 front-ends. My 2001 has a Dana 50. I THINK later 2002 got the Dana 60 for all models.

The REAL difference between a 3/4 ton F250 and a 1-ton F350?

Insurance and registration.

Before deciding which one you want, check with your insurance agent and your state's DMV
... and quoted from Difference a between a 250 and 350 PSD 4X4?

I have an 05 F250 and I haul MUCH more than a ton of weight!!! About 5 ton to get close.... LOL, but we all know what you meant!

Some will say that the 7.3 is the better motor but the tranny is nowhere close to the 6.0's torqshift.
