Holley tuning

I am running a 400M with a Weiand Intake, Edelbrock cam with 214 degrees on the intake and exhaust. I have a 750 Holley 4160 on it, I know that this is a bit oversized, but it's what i have and can't afford a new one. It is running a rich all the time, i know how to fix this at idle, but i need to now if anyone knows what size jets to run in it. I went from #72 to #70 jets, and that made little difference. Also, when i get on the gas and the secondaries open up, it pours out the black smoke. I thought these were controlled by vacuum, but they seem to need adjusting also. If anyone has any info or knows of links to pages that deal with this, please let me know. A chart comparing carb size, engine size, and carb settings would be great. Also, the truck is driven in New Orleans all the time, so it is exactly at sea level.

Go to amazon.com and search for under books for Holley Carburetors and a bunch of how-to books will pop up, that's how I found one for 12bucks. I'm not an expert but do have basic knowledge on tuning. You're in the ballpark with your jet in the primary, I don't think it would cause that much of a rich condition. It sounds like your secondaries are opening too soon. The secondaries are opened by a diaphram which is regulated by a spring. If the spring is too light, the secondaries open early and you have the rich condition. Pull the spring and go to your local speed shop, ask them for the next few heavier springs. Hope this helps.
