I have a 351W with the Edelbrock Performer Package including heads. I was contemplating going with a roller cam when I rebuilt the engine, but the budget wouldn't allow it, so I went with the Performer cam. I was wondering if anyone has made this switch and if so, was there a big difference in performance. I would pick a roller cam with something like 215 to 220 duration @ .050 and about .500 to .525 lift. The truck ain't no slouch now, but I am power hungry. Thanks,
If you're power-hungry, why did you choose the performer package over the performer rpm? Edelbrock claims 400hp and 412ft/lbs torque with their performer rpm kit including heads and a pair of 1 3/4" headers. I'm just curious as I will hopefully be building a similar engine and plan on using performer rpm parts with the new 800cfm carb . Those stroker kits are looking very appealing. I'm dreaming of a 408W (or maybe a 428W). Now I just have to find the truck to put it in (looking for a 53-56 F100).
Well, I ordered my parts on 2 different days and talkked to 2 different guys from PAW. The first order I placed, the guy said I was doing right in ordering the Performer RPM heads. The next day when I ordered the cam, intake and carb, a different guy said I needed to stick with the regular Performer package since I had a truck. So I wound up with big valve RPM heads and Performer cam, intake and 600 carb. According to the Edelbrock website and links found there, there isn't a big difference between the RPM and the regular head but there is a big difference between the 1.90 valve head and the 2.02. With gas prices the way they are, it may be a good thing I got the Performer cam. I am getting 11 to 12 mpg normal driving. T-18 4 sp, 4x4 89 F-150. The strokers appealed to me too, but as I was starting out with a truck equipped with a 4.9L and had to start from scratch, I had to cut a few costs.
Good luck to ya,
DannyP
