Where in NJ are you from James? I live in Bergen County, and I know what you mean. Dirt roads? Most people never saw one here. But I also have a place in the boonies of Upstate NY. I take the dirt roads over the main roads any time I can up there. Something to be said about how surreal it is. Almost like the vehicular version of finding a trail out in the woods. It just plain feels natural & real; not like our artificial paved streets. The experience is more “organic” for lack of a better phrase on the dirt roads. I can enjoy the slow drive past the scenic beauty of nature, rather than rushing down an asphalt street.

I grew up near Augusta, ME, and we moved right after they paved the road. I loved living in the woods. The old narrow gauge railroad went right accross our property. They tore up the tracks on that branch in 1915, but I could still bike the roadbed from Winslow to Wiscasset, and all the way up to Burnham! When I lived out in AZ, I used to drive the fire roads in Flagstaff, and in Payson. There are so few dirt roads near me now, I feel lost!

Believe it or not, I live approx. 55 miles from our nation's capitol, and just 10 miles from my house is a dirt road that still crosses a stream without a bridge (a real ford:P ). In addition to that, there are still numerous dirt roads within a 60 mile radius of Wash. DC. Granted, they are disappearing under asphalt much too quickly, but they are still quite enjoyable, especially the ones that run along the base of the mountains of the Shendoah National Park.

This is about how it was for my family as well. We moved from Seattle to the woods in western Montana where it is all dirt roads. The city people are moving in and trying to get the roads paved, but haven't gotten very far yet. You can tell which ones they are because they pay to have thier driveways paved up to the dirt road.

Wow! Thanks for all those childhood memories that have been hiding in the back closet of my mind. I really enjoyed that and thought "How true".

I was doing some research on Maine a few years ago and found out only 2% of the driveways in the state are paved. Another interesting thing, almost everyone owns a shotgun and Maine was rated as having the safest schools.

dirt roads

hey 41clay, what road are you talking about? Kinda sounds like one I drove once. I lived on dirt roads for 13 years of my life or so. They finally got around to paving over that collechie (sp) crap they put down. I hate that stuff. Give me good old TX red dirt anyday. I live in a place where I can drive for oh, maybe 2 mins and I'm at a dirt road going past some cotton field. There's a farmer out here that has so much equipment, that when they pick up and move fields, it looks like a mobile city becuz of all their lights. Sure ain't the old way but it reminds ya to remember the old way...

Thanx!

I live in the Washington DC area, and I love driving west through Virginia to explore the little towns in the Shenandoah mountains. Anyone heard of Sperryville, VA? Or Washington, VA?
