My truck is in the shop getting a transmission rebuild right now and I was thinking about getting a trans temp gauge put in as long as its already in the shop. When I started looking at gauges I figured I may as well get a pod to mount them in. Should I get a two gauge pod or a three? What gauges other than trans temp should I get? Boost, oil, rear end temp, fuel pressure? I currently dont have to much done to the truck (air filter, exhaust) but I want to do more in the future. I read something about doing the fuel pump regulator requireing a fuel pressure gauge, should I get that.
Basically what other gagues should I get besides trans temp, also. will a line have to be run from from the trans line to the interior, or are the senders electronic? Its an 01 7.3l
Tranny temp, boost, and Pyro. Those are the biggies. Don't be in such a hurry. You can easily do all of that yourself at your leisure. After that I would maybe consider some others but those are the big three. Then chip it and then move on.
Those were the three I was thinking, why the hell is the pyro so expensive compaired to the rest, and what brands do you guys recommend. I dont like the look of much of whats out there.
Alot of the fellas here have autometer or isspro. When my truck was at BTS they talked me into the X monitor, and I love it! It sits nicely tucked at the bottom of the pillar and has a digital readout.
Well, that is because the Inconnel or whatever it is called sendor must withstand temps in excess of 1600*F. The Pyro is critical as are the other three. A must have to monitor what is going on. It can tell you when there is a problem.
Now if you think that is expensive, price a fuel pressure gauge with isolator etc. Not a must have, but an excellent on board diagnostic since the puter has no idea about this reading, but you could end up on the side of the road.

Where does this guage get it's input, the puter? Do you see where I am going?
I don't know, that is the problem. Most here have tried and true units from known vendors. You sometimes get what you pay for. Those may be the cat's **** and they may be total garbage. I have DiPricols from ITP. 2 years now and running fine. They are LED lit and match nicely. Check ITP Diesel or go to DiPricols home page for a look.
The reason I like mechanical gauges is because when the puter or one of it's sensors get out of whack, the reading will be off. A mechanical gauge with it's own sensor/sender will tell you if it is a BS item or not.

What is better, a pre-turbo pyrometer, or a post turbo? Also, this gauge seems like it would be a PITA to install, how bad is it?
I like/have the pre-turbo unit. It tells me what is going to the turbo. Post-turbo units are also OK but you have to figure the diff after the turbo has absorbed all that heat. Right around 300*f or so. The turbo does serve as a heat sink of sorts. What you see downstream is what has already occurred there. That is why I went pre-turbo.
Now, all mechanical gauges have the same PITA install factor. Easy for some, harder for others. Look in my gallery for my A-pillar whoopsie. On a scale of 1-10, I rate the gauge install at a 2 or 3 despite my whoopsie.
I'm with Tenn01PSD350 on you get what you pay for. I have the autometer sportcomp in my truck and they have been flawless. I will say when I helped a buddy install his ISSPRO gauges, I was impressed by their quality. If I was to do it over again, I'd probably go with ISSPRO.
The components you're monitoring to protect aren't cheap, so why use a cheap gauge. I wouldn't waste the time or money buying a cheap chinese set. Do it once and do it right.

I had BTS do the install. I do know that it looks like any other gauge hookup. With sensors placed in the normal locations. The difference is that there is like a little computer box under the dash now. I think that is what takes the info in and then sends it to the display. If I can figure out how I will try to get pics and post something about it.
