I have a 1999 F-350 4x4 with a 7.3 engine and standard trans. The problem I'm having is, accelerating or driving, everything works fine. It's when I'm going down a hill, the drivetrain starts making a loud grinding noise, then the engine rpm goes to an idle. When you give it gas to get going again, the engine revs up and acts like it slams back into gear. The trans was rebuilt about 3000 miles ago and a new clutch put in, but the tranfer case is the original with 200K+ on it. Any suggestions? Can this have something to do with the transfer case?
I know this is an old post, but I will resurrect it. I am having the same issues with my 300 strait six and the 4 speed 4x4. When I start down a hill, it will sometimes start freewheeling and grinding loud! I can clutch it and it will stop. I usually have to come to a stop and start again to get it to go. Today when it started, I was able to move the 4x4 stick and get the grinding to change pitch. I feel like it has something to do with the transfer case, but I'm not sure what. Any ideas?
yes, sounds like a transfer case problem. I would check the transfer case shift linkage for wear/bent/worn as it may not be fully going into gear. Also check your engine and trans mounts as, if bad, may be allowing the shift linkage to move the transfer case out of gear.
Will do. I just replaced both motor mounts and the center tranmission mount so I know those are good. The transfer case seems to go into gear well. When I first got the truck, there was no oil in the transfer case, but it had been sitting for over 3 years.
