Oops...it could be either a 8.8 or a 9 inch. The 9 inch rear axle was available till 1987, the 8.8 was introduced in 1983. I've decoded 100's of axle codes on FTE, but most are pre 1980. When I saw "Ford" rear end in the axle decoder in the Ford truck parts catalog, I typed 9 inch out of habit.
It's easy to tell which rear axle you have. If it has a removable cover on the back side, it's an 8.8. No cover = 9 inch.

The time you waste spinning tires makes it easier for the guy to get a holeshot on ya.I had a 81 f100 swb with a mildly built 460,c6 and 3.25 traction loc and she would not spin for anything except wet pavement.
hey bud its def a 8.8 got on line and found out what you just said about the back plate coming off and it does now to find someone with a set of gears for it i got a friend that has a set of pos trac 3.73 comp with all washers eerything and he said for 350 he would sell me the set and put it in he ownes a performance place here in lexington so i may do that but thanks for the info
