Slipping into reverse and drive ??? Help Me Please
My 69 F250 automatic trans will slip out of Park and go into Reverse while idleing in Park and will slip into Drive from Neutral ??? Is there an adjustment I can make or ??? Thanks In Advance For You Help ... Jim.

1, Worn or broken detent inside the steering column. Detent, also known as a shift gate, bolts to the bottom of the upper flange. The tab from the shift lever fits into the detent. Major reason why detent fails: Putting the vehicle in park before appling the hand brake. This causes the parking pawl inside the transmission to lock tight. Then force is required to get the shift lever out of park. This action breaks the ends off the detent. Detent: I_I_I_I_I_I_I = picture this as half moon shaped, enclosed. Each space (notch) corresponds to P R N D1 D2 L.
2. Gearshift selector lever bushing on the bottom of the column is bad. The shift rod snaplocks into the bushing. Vibrations from the engine can dislodge the rod if the bushing (it's plastic) is worn, or broken.
3. Similar bushing on the manual control lever on the transmission. Same issues as the selector lever bushing.

Let's also not forget if the front cab mounts are rusted, it allows the cab to settle onto the frame. It throws the linkage adjustments out of kilter and causes them to bind. Been there, done that. Dan
