What is the difference between the badging on the Ford trucks? some just say 4x4, oters say 4x4 off road, and others still say FX4? Mine just says 4x4 but when I looked under a 4x4 off road it had the same springs, same tires, everything looked to be the same with the two trucks. Mine could have had the bed changed though, I was just wondering what the differences are.
A 4x4 is just the option for four wheel drive. It has a transfer case, Independent Front Suspnesion, and front driveshaft.
A 4x4 off road, is a extra option for the 4x4 option. Basicaly it's suposed to have off road shocks(springs are the same), and skid plates.
The FX4 option is the same as 4x4 off road, just Ford started useing it in 2002.
Not all Fx4s have 3.73s.
A lot of them do, and I've seen/been told by salesmen that that's what they have, but I've crawled under the trucks myself, and seen the gear ratio tag on the rear axle, and some have 3.55s.
Also from what I understand (at least on the new body styles for sure) the "Rancho" shocks are stock shocks that are painted and have a Ranch sticker, and Ford just pays them to use their name.
The main thing with the 4x4 off roads and Fx4s is the skid plates
So there is no way for me to know what mine was originally? the side of the truck had a crease in it. Crease got worse as it headed for the door but the bed is perfect without a mark in it. I can't imagine cresing the cab corner this deep and not touching the bed. I think it was replaced with a take off bed but I don't know what the truck was when it left the dealers lot.
What year is your truck... FX4 sticker replaced the 4x4 off road sticker in 02' so if your truck is an 01 or older its probably a 4x4 off road... if its an 02' or newer its an FX4....
But there is no difference in the two packages to speak of... they offer the same options... just a new name, and apparently some painted stock shocks with stickers.
My truck is a 2000, the right side had a crease in it that was all the way to the cab corner but the bed is perfect. I can't see how they could hit the cab corner that hard and not get the bed. So I think the bed has been changed on the truck.
Yours is a standard 4x4. The OFFROAD 4x4 has skid plates, 17" wheels and stiffer shocks. In 2002 they changed the OFFROAD package to the FX4 package which included Rancho shocks and different decals along with the skid plates and 17" wheels.
You could also get all the options the OR or FX4 package had, in a lot of cases if you got the tow package with a 4wd and skid plates and then had a OR or FX4 on top of that you were just paying for the decals.
I have no special packages and have everything a OR package would have had with the exception of 1 skid plate, which can be bought from Ford for a hellova lot less than a package would have cost.
Other than that it's just the basic 4x4? Guess I've never really looked at the bumpers for the difference, but would explain why when I was in my accident last year the body shop wanted to throw a chrome bumper on my truck instead of a painted one.
