360 Mystery problem

I probably should have posted this here but I am trying to find out what my real problem may be with my F-250.

Here is the link to the other forum:

I have heard nothing but horror stories about Cardone anything. I do not know if these stories are true or not, so that is something to think about.

I had a similar problem with my 65. I was out to lunch one day and went by the junior high school. I figured I'd make some noise and put it in granny gear doing about 4500-4800rpms, all the while doing about 12-15mph, within the school zone speed limit, and at the end stomped on it and all of a sudden, I see a ring fling across the road. I look down and see that my alt light came on and so i stopped and looked at it. The balancer had come apart on me. the rubber between the balancer and the pulley disentigrated or something. so i ended up going with a balancer from a 360 that came from a 73 F250 4x4 manual that was originally a F100 2wd auto. but thats another story.
So yeah it could be slipping and giving you an inaccurate timing measurement.

Looks like I have a couple of other things to check - thanks!

I checked the harmonic balancer today and it looks fine. It seems whole and solid. I did mark it so i could monitor movment on it. I still need to check the distributor/cam gears. Hope that is fine. If that is not it - I don't know what else to check. But on the same note I hope the cam gear is not tore up.

I pulled out the distributor tonight. Inspecting the distributor the gear looked good, roll pin intact. In fact this is a Cardone rebuild and you can see on that bottom gear sprocket two other places they have drilled and had roll pins in other locations. Anyhow - I looked down into the motor through the distributor hole and rotated the crank to see the cam gear move and it was clean all the way around.

So now I am back to square one: I still don't know how my timing moved. I figure it moved a total of 11 - 12 degrees. Even with this timing mystery I still don't know if there is another problem I am overlooking! I just will need to stop being a pansie and go drive the thing and see if it acts up again. I got a dead tree to return to the nursery tomorrow. Wish me luck!
