Trying to stop an oil leak at the downshift linkage. I have had the transmission guy replace the whole linkage and it still leaks. Is there a secret to the o ring replacement? Is there a special one or more than one. My wife picked up the trans and he gave her a bunch of gaskets and o rings left over I only get home on weekends so I haven't been able to talk to the trans guy to ask the proper proceedure. Anyone know the secret? Thanks The 49 is comming along.
If it's anything like the C6 you have to drain it remove the pan and valve body, remove the external linkage, push the shaft in far eough to replace the O-ring then reverse the process. Or have a talk with the guy who rebuilt it, should be a warranty fix.
I'm fighting the same problem on a c4 in a 66 Mustang, I removed the nuetral saftey switch and kickdown linkage and replaced the Oring..it still leaks, and I haven't been able to locate a drawing of this area to confirm if there is an inner seal on the trans body like the C6 yet..will be intressted to see what you find out

it has been years since I was in one, but I thought there was just an "O" ring.
You have to be careful and get the right one or it wil leak though. They are not marked, so I typically compared the original one to all the little ones in the kit to get the right one. It is guess work unless you have done a few. LOL
thanks, that would be helpful, I found one but it only shows the internal and no view of the shift linkage area, so I'm still confused if theres one or two Orings
There is a small O-ring that goes into a groove on the inside of the main shifter shaft. The main shifter shaft goes through a lip seal that is pressed into the transmission body. The O-ring size has to be correct or it will leak. Make sure the end of the kickdown shaft is really clean before you push it in or you'll drag crap that will damage the O-ring into the main shaft bore.

thanks, that helped, mine must be leaking at the trans body, not major, just small drips, just enough to make me mad
I checked with about 6 transmission shops today and found out that a new upgrade o ring is available for the downshift linkage it seems that the previous o ring was not very reliable. The new one has concave sides and a square sholder and is said to be a vast improvement over the old one. I'll try it and see what happens.

There are TWO different seals.
C7AZ-7B498-A .. Manual Control Lever Oil Seal ~ Fits: 1964/72 ~ All C4's.
D5AZ-7B498-A .. Manual Control Lever Oil Seal. ~ Fits 1973/80's ~ All C4's.
The is the only seal shown on the manual control lever. It fits at the shoulder of the lever.
Why do these new seals start leaking? They are no good. Here's the scenario: These seals come in a plastic bag, package of 10. The bag once opened, can't be resealed. Not a lot of these seals are sold, so they lay in a drawer for months, even years. They are then exposed to the air, and over time shrivel up. They look new, but...
Why aren't many of these seals sold? Because they also come in the transmission overhaul kits, so the individual seals don't see too many sales.
