Seems I have to drive my truck at 90 temp outside for ever to get it warm? installed new 190 stat, flushed cooling system but still runs cold.infared heat gun show 151# at themostat housing after 25 min running.Hour on the road 171 degree. Fan is always running.I can turn fan by hand with motor off but is a little stiff to turn.Is my fan clutch shot?
My '83 351W had a similar problem. After replacing the thermostat, and still had problems warming up, I replaced the thermostat housing itself. Seems that over the years, the pot metal disintigrated and allowed alot of coolant to flow around the new thermostat.
Also, be sure that the thermostat is staying in the small groove. Sometimes, it can move around during installation and cause the problem you are having.
It is the stat housing,Sensor on housing broke when I removed to put it in new stat housing any one know what those sensor due? Could I just block them off?I know they are not for temp gage.
If it didn't need to be there, it wouldn't be there.
It's the ECT sensor. Engine Coolant Temp sensor. The sender that the computer uses is different from the one the dash gauge uses. If you leave it broken off, your computer thinks your engine is always cold when it's not. You will use MUCH more gas, and your exhaust and EGR system will eventually get clogged up with carbon.
Sorry - now that I realize what forum I'm in, is this an EFI truck?
No this is a 1984 302 with carb 2 barrel holly 2150. drove truck today after repairs and sensors left unhooked. short ride saw no diffence in performance with out sensors.Still want to find out what they are.Engine now running normal temp.
If you have disabled your emission control system, you dont need to worry about the sensor. My '83 has a 2bbl Holley carb, and a DS-2 ignition system without the aid of a dead computer. Runs just fine.
Follow the lines going to and coming from the sensor/switch. More than likely you will end up at the EGR valve, and possibly the distributor. Make sure you are getting vacuum at the dist when you rev the engine or you will notice a difference if you drive it more. Your fuel mileage will be terrible.
