I have a 1999 7.3 F250. It has 245k. Started to get a whine from somewhere , checked the power steering that is not it. pulled the plug on the rear end had some metal on the plug , and about 3/4 quart low. Filled it back up. So now I am thinking bearings maybe a ring and pinion. Now it has seemed to have lossed some of its power almost like it a gassser would misfire. Is this related or 2 different problems? Does anybody have any advice? or what to look at next? Thanks in advance.
One thing I'd recommend you check is the turbo: remove the piping from the intake to the compressor side of the turbo, and then grasp the turbo shaft/wheel by the nut and see if you can wiggle it side to side, or in and out. It shouldn't have any perceivable play, but if yours does, it may be rubbing against the turbo housing, and not performing as efficiently as it should, hence the lack of power.
If you have a limited slip, that could explain the metal on the plug, as they do wear and emit metal from the clutches. This stuff is pretty fine, more like a dust, but covered in oil, lager chunks would be an issue. Does the whine follow rpms, or speed? If it follows speed, check your u joints!
