Ford hood emblems

I am trying to put my Ford F100 emblems back on the hood of my rig but the attaching bolts are broken off. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can attach them? I thought about double sided tape but I don't think the tape is tick enough to attach to the back of the emblem and still contact the body. Would it be possible to have new bolts welded onto the back of the emblem or would that be impractical. New ones are a bit expensive. Thanks.

I've heard of superglue working to attach new bolts, but I would doubt they would hold up in heat and humidity.. I would think some soldering might work.. but I've never done it personally in that application.. I'm sure someone in this forum has come up with an ingenius method. I would definately avoid double sided tape though

Make sure the area is wax free and glue the emblem on with silicone. Use tape to hold them in place until the silicone cures and I think you will remove the paint before the silicone will peel off.

or apply the double sided tape....twice. This will increase the thickness, but I don't think you want it sticking out too far.

On the '51-'52 emblems ("F-1"), the round ones on the hood, there is a plate inside the emblem that has what I first thought were studs. If you spin the metal strap that holds the studs around inside the round part, it can be removed from the round emblem and you will see the studs are actually carriage bolts that can be replaced. Don't know if '53 - '56 are constructed the same? (A picture would explain this very much better but I don't have one)

paint and body supply stores sell 3M emblem double sided tape, it is very good stuff, thicker than your average hardware store stuff. A little trick besides cleaning the surface with a wax and grease remover, use a heat gun (or blow drier) to soften the adhesive on the tape before apply it to the body. It should last for many years.

When I got my 54 I found that the PO had used an epoxy to put the screws back on and it seemed to hold well.

If your truck has clearcoat paint, don't use silicone, as it strips off the clearcoat.

The PO of my truck welded all the emblem holes shut, then welded plates under where they go. I guess I'm involuntarily going for the clean look...

I read your post but don't know if this would be a solution, but is there enough of the stud that is broken off that you could half way thread a nut and then thread a bolt up snug and use an epoxy glue, then trim the bolt to the desired lengh??? My thought anyway. Hope this could be of some help.

There may be enough stub left to do try and and glue a bolt on what's left but then I don't know if it will allow the emblem to fit closely enough to the body. I also think that the emblem tape idea is good but I saw it and I don't think it is thick enough. I will see if a machinist I know can fabricate a new bolt attachment and let you know.

I'd try some JB Weld to attach the pins back in place.

Which emblem is expensive? I have bought all brand new NOS or repro ones for Gracie off ebay and none were expensive IMHO.
The double stick tapes are meant for today's flat backed lightweight plastic emblems, not heavy hollowbacked metal ones, I'd be surprised if it held for long. If there is enough of the boss left on the emblem you may be able to attach a new stud with JB weld a double hypo dispensed epoxy for metal available at a hardware store. Roughen the area where the glue will attach with course sandpaper and wash the area and the bolt with acetone. Let the glue cure with the emblem sitting face up will keep the epoxy from getting in the way of mounting. If the boss inside is completely gone and you are willing to experiment try grinding the boss back so the heat of a bolt set in place will be inside the emblem then embed the head in JB weld. JB weld sticks to metal better than any other epoxies I've tried.

I'm talking about the side hood emblems which say F100 in a circle and FORD down the length. I have seen them for about $100/set. I think that the double sided tape idea won't work because of the recessed back of the emblem. The pieces that are broken are the bolts the pins are ok. I will look into the JB weld stuff-is it strong enough to hold when a nut is tightened?
