Well, i have an 83 F350 with the 460 7.5L in it. I am having a serious issue with it right now. I drove about 40miles out of town and it ran like a champ, turned around to come back and it started up fine from sitting for 2hrs while i unloaded it. IT ran for about 8miles then started to spit and choke and i could put my foot to the floor and it would sit between 1000 and 1500 RPMS, didnt have any torque what so ever.
So, as i drove my buddy that took me up to pick it up the day after called me about 15minutes outside of town and said "youre blowing brake fluid all over the place!" NO brake fade so i glanced at my oil guage and i was sitting at about 25lbs... if that. I got it home and pulled right in front of my drive way and it stalled out. Got it pushed into the driveway and popped the hood to see the front passenger bank of the motor covered in oil.
We pulled the plugs and the carbureator off of it, the intake was/is completely covered, the plugs are clean as a whisle.
PCV system plugged, maybe. Possibly the PCV valve on the right ) passenger) valve cover or you have a hole in a piston. Compression check after the valve check.
Sum one else siad the same thing but, if it was a piston, wouldnt it be a constant issue? Not just happen all of a sudden?
But, i guess i will see when i pull the head off.
Do a compression check before you pull the haeds. If you holed a piston a compression will tell you. A hole in a piston will usually smoke and puke oil but still run on seven. 25 pounds of oil pressure is ok for a warm engine with some miles on it.
THe intake was flooded with oil. And the oil was pretty hot and pitted the aluminum. SO, i was planning on replacing it. I guess i could clean the block off and check the gasket from the outside. But, i know the intake must have been leaking becuase the front left three bolts on the block were loose.
If the plugs were clean then you don't have any internal problems. You said the aluminum was pitted, what aluminum? Did the 83's have aluminum manifolds on them or is it after market? If it is after market then the possibility that it was improperly installed is a high probably. I would take it off and examine it very carefully. There is a good possibility that it is warped if it was torqued down improperly.
