351m-question And Info

Question.I have 78 f150 4x4 351m,block and heads stock. Now the truck has 124k miles i have not had the truck about 6mths but I have made some mods like edlebrook intake and carb, headers and etc,you can check out my gallery for pics to see.And the Truck not a every day driver just a weekend warrior to show the jeep boys and anyone else around here that this old Ford can hang with the best of them, the 351m-bottom end torq blows everyone away. They nickname my truck the ((BLUE BEAST))

Question. When the motor cold every time on the 1st start up it puffs black smoke every time,is it possible bad vavle seats?

1-more thing ticking noise i cant figure out at all, example start the truck and you can hold the trottle wide open and what ever you want to do and engine sounds clean nothing 100%perfect,but when your driving the truck and the motor gets warm to its normal running temp and running about 55-or over hearing small ticking noise coming from the right side and the ticking goes with the amount of speed or trottle your have it on.And you let of the gas ticking stops you cant here it? any info guys thanks

Black smoke means your running too rich. You need to do a little carb tuning. If it was blue smoke on start up, then that would indicate worn valve guides. As to your ticking noise, it could be any number of things, but the first thing that comes to mind is that it is a lifter ticking. It's possible that you might be running too light of an oil. But, not being able to hear it myself, I'm just guessing here.

are you sure it's a 351m and not the 400? the M made 168 hp and not much bottom end...it would be difficult to impress anyone with unless you have tractor pull gears. The 400, however, does have more low end torque and can be made to be very impressive...just wondering...maybe it's your driving that impresses...or they all have 4.0's and hwy gears? I have a 460 in a heavy '79 bronco and it's not that impressive as is and i've owned a few M's...

Anyway, whatever works but if you have a decent 400 build you certainly would impress even the most difficult 4by addict. And a stock 400 with intake, 4bbl and headers would be well on the way....

fwiw, I had a similar problem, (1978 4x4) my lift kit moved the front driveshaft angle down just enough to rub on the exhaust pipe (duals, no headers) the acceleration flexed the frame just enough to make a loud noise, and the faster it went in rpm, the faster the noise was. let off the gas, the frame laid back, the noise went away. So, that said, does the noise still act up while in nuetral?

Thanks for the info, the ticking noise is crazy.Like i explained it.Monday i took both valve covers off and check my rocker arms and even pushrods make sure everything look fine and was tight nothing loose and nothing i counld catch with the eye everything check out ok no ajustment needed. You know really think it is just the hole hydro rocker arm system with (125k miles factory on heads and block),just have to live with it,bc there no effect on the motor with power or anyting.the power there,i dont have a clue and dont want to fix something that is not broke.....and yes it is a 351m-mod 400//on factory valve covers tag (351m-400)and ran the # and came back 351m-400..iam the 3rd owner and 1st and 2nd owner i know no motor change sense factory

my 351M is bone stock and i have 35 boggers on it and itll smoke the heck outta them, and with 32's i can smoke all 4, so i wouldnt say that their is no "bottom end torque" cuz ive beat many new trucks, like the tundras and some hondas that are pieces of SH@#

Jett...351/400 means it could be either. usually the tag on the valve cover will say 351M/400 with either 351M or 400 printed below it to make the motor size known.

it would be nice for you to know for sure. and maybe there are a few 'freak' 351M's that are as nasty as zpmps says his is....I've owned them to include fresh ones and they were all doggish...the only way they would smoke 33" tires is if they were on the back of a pinto.

My bro bought a '78 lariat f150 new with M...then had it built...it was ok but nothing like the stock 429 he later put into it....then built it. Liked it so much I got a '79 bronco with a built 429.

QUOTE]yah, the guy before me said it was bone stock and it was real "doggish" and it needed a rebuild, he had it for sale for 2500, so i offered him 1,500 b/c of the mysterious "motor" and changed the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, distrubutor, ignition module, and put a chrome diamanod plated powerband in it and it runs like a champ now. LOL I guess their are just "freak ones" b/c my neighbor has a 400 and 3.73's and i have a 351M and 3.55 adn i smoked him, crazy isnt it??

Hey,i didnt know i said the motor had no torque..I was asking a few things about a small ticking noise iam having with the truck after the motor gets warm.I didnt say the motor dogish or anything about burning 33 or 35inch tires either.

Sorry i didnt know that 351m-400 meant the motor could be either one.I look up the vin it came back 351m-400 5.8LITER and like i stated earlier valve cover decal said 351m-400..Hell i dont know what it is but the motor IS strong has hell and has plenty and much more torque AND POWER then any other old ford motor i have mess with.In the woods or street the truck is a beast, never at any time thought i need and wanted more power. And on the street the truck will get up and go alot of power to me,strong i love it.BUT like i said the block and heads or stock but i have added alot of other mods and replaced 100%under the hood beside block and heads,IAM HAPPy i love old blue great truck i love more than anything if FORD would go back to the real trucks like this one.....

with the 5.8 designation it's a 351. do what you feel good about for sure...I love these old things too.

All I want is good low and mid range power the best chance for mileage.
