I am building a custom turbo setup for my 5.0 mustang. I was wondering if I should get a blow-off valve or a wastegate? Does a blow-off valve continue to dump the extra boost the whole time the turbo is spooling, or only when you let off the throttle? Which one is better? Do I need both? Thanks.
you should have both. the wastegate controls the boost pressure where the blow of valve releases boost pressure when you let off the throttle the boost pressure does not flow backwards threw the intake pipes and try to spin the impeller backwards causeing a surge in the turbo and possiable damaging it. do a search on the web 4 both and you can get a very detailed descripion of how they both work
diesels dont need a bov bhasecause they do not have a throttle body, when you let off the gas in a diesel the the fuel is decreased not the air to slow the engine. so the turbo slows with the motor and its not a big "shock" to the system whereas a gas engine the throttle body slams shut and all the air the turbos pushing has no where to go but back words. as far as a wastegate your 6.0 if im not mistaken has what they call variable pitch impeller and it uses this to control boost but i could be mistaken so hopefully sumone else will shed some light on this.
That makes a lot of sense. I forgot that diesels don't have a throttle body, and yes, my truck does have a variable geometry turbo. I always thought that the purpose of a variable turbo was for faster spool up speeds at all engine rpms. But I quess it would also regulate the amount of boost that the turbo puts out because it is on the exhaust side of the turbo. Thanks for your help. Also, when I buy a wastegate and a BOV, what do I consider when choosing which size to get? I have a .70 intake side on my turbo, not sure of exhaust side, but both headers will be feeding it and it is a lightly modified 5.0 engine. I am looking to mainly be a street/strip car. I only drive it about three or four times a month, and to the track every couple of weeks. Thanks again.
what kind of turbo are you running and what is the model?? and what kind of boost are you going to be running?? this will help stear you in the right direction
What do you mean by "kind" of turbo? The model I think is an M14. I got it from a friend for cheap and it's brand new. I plan on running about 6-10lbs of boost because a lot of guys told me a stock 5.0 can handle about 12-14, so I'll stay a little on the safe side.
the best i can tell its off an import of some kind. im not sure of much else. i would assume any smaller wastegate and bov would be suitable. but i would recemend finding a different turbo that you know more info about. i would sell the one you have and pick up another with that money. it might save you a few headaches
what would you recommend? I am kind of on a light budget, but I also want to do it myself because I enjoy this kind of stuff. I know my way around a car, as I was a BMW tech a few years ago.
i would sugest running a t3/t4 hybrid. you can usually pick them up pretty cheap online. or find 2 smaller and run a twin turbo setup. if you do decide to run the turbo yoiu have just make sure to be careful unless you can find out more info on it.
sorry but i didnt realize what i was typing in the last post for a single just a straight t4 for a single the t3/t4 would prob overspeed on a single setup in a 5.0 unless you run real low rpms. what kind of rpms are yoiu lookin at runnin if you can tell me that i might be able to tell you what turbo best suites what your lookin to do.
