Smile hard starting

hi everybody,

1991 f 250 IDI 7.3 Liter. 249,000 miles always maintained every 3000 miles oil change, 10000 miles fuel filter water seperator. New 500 miles ago>> fuel transfer pump(from block) new glow plugs.

The problem is when the truck sits for a couple of hours it seems like the fuel filter drains out of fuel. The truck will start normally then buck-- like when you change the fuel filter with out filling it up with diesel. The engine then shuts off quickly. after about two minutes of cranking the engine it fires right up no problem. Once started it runs mint as usual.

Some one said of course (the injection pump) granted- it is the original factory one- but when driving it runs fine. I think they njust wanted 800.00 dollars from me.

somone else suggested a pin hole in the high pressure tube from the transfer to the injection pump. But there is no fuel anywhere. Please let me know what you thoughts are I love my old truck that i have had since 1994.

thanks james

A pinhole in a high presure fuel line will show a leak. However, a small leak in the injector lines can let air in without letting fuel out because fuel molecules are much larger than air molecules.

My guess is that the return lines were disturbed when you changed the glow plugs (or they're just old and starting to crack). A good parts store should have a "return line kit" for around $35.

I would agree with tbone91. The o-rings in the fuel return fittings harden over time and can crack when distrubed. I just went through this on my 84 f350. If that doesn't seem to fix it, then I would suspect the lift pump that you just installed. It sounds like the problem started right after the swap?

the lines were changed about 9 years ago, o rings and fuel return lines. I do not think the high pressure lines have ever been changed. I will check to see if that may be the problem, Thank you so much for your help.

Change the return lines and O rings.
That is the most likely place to find your problem.

The high pressure lines do not need changed unless thay are cracked or damaged.
A leak there will be very evident since the fuel pressure is close to 2000 PSI in them.
