Vehicle dates

I bought my truck new with 66 miles on it on Dec 31 (new years eve) 1999. All my paper work says its a 99 model. Yet the silver sticker on the driver side suicide door says " Date 10/98". I guess this is the build date for 99 models? Seem like a long time from the factory line to show room though.

Previously, when I have talked to folks via phone, email, etc, about how my truck is equipped some have asked for the year model and some want to know the build date. I would think that the build date would be a better indicator. Yes, no, maybe???

BTW the GVWR is 8800 and the GAWR is 4970. What is the accounting for the large difference.

Yeap, keep that build date in mind when you order alot of things, brakes for one! You have whats referred to as an "early 99". You owned a 99, in the year of 1998, because ford didnt have a 98 diesel truck. It was a late production, which was called a 99. There are some other differences aswell. IE usually no air intake heater, smaller turbo, smaller injectors, smaller hpop, smaller intake plenums. If you end up needing parts, or have issues, do not hesitate to ask around here, as there are many well informed people in this forum in regards to your truck.

Thanks. I plan to put a set of gauges on it PDQ and then maybe an AIS intake. I had planned to put in a controler after that but after your post I'm now thinking that maybe I should upgarde some of that "smaller" stuff (injectors and turbo maybe?) before getting a contoller since the tuning might be slightly different. What do yo guys think.

Get some gauges, get a tuner. Run it. If you need more, upgrade then. If you get a dp tuner, and some other custom tuners, you can always get them re burned down the road, when you get injectors, turbo etc. For now, i would just get some gauges and a tuner. Thats just my .02

my early 99 was built 3/98..it needed the tunes....I did the mods listed below right off the bat...i highly recommend DP tuner for you early 99....what a different...I just up graded my turbo to a stock 99.5-03 turbo about 3 weeks ago..pics in gallery...big different between the early 99 and the later years..wasn't much gain in power but did cool the EGT's..the biggest gain will be a 99.5-03 HPOP all this can be done on the same tunes ...when I get ready ill get a bigger turbo and bigger injectors and then have my DP tuner re burned...

You need to read this thread, and get the proper door sticker to fix your incorrect GAWR on the one that came from the factory! https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/626108-early-99s-check-your-gawr-sticker.html It seems to me your truck must've sat around on the lot for about a year, because I bought my 10/98 build date in Jan 1999.

Thanks Ernest for the weight info. I'll talk to a local dealership. I still have 2 questions. Does the GVWR include the max bed loading/tounge weight? And does the GAWR NOT include tire weights.

The GAWR is the weight the truck scale indicates with the single axel on an individual scale, like most truck stops have. So yes it includes the weight of the tires. It's the tires you have to worry about, because if you exceed those weight ratings (which determine the GAWR for our trucks if you get a corrected sticker) they can fail immediately. Otherwise, exceeding the GAWR just results in accelerated wear on the axel components.

Others might disagree, but my interpretation for GVWR is that it doesn't include hitch weight, but the total load on the rear axel (or any axel) can't exceed its GAWR. Now let me qualify that, whatever you're towing has to have good enough brakes to stop its own weight. The GCWR is the total weight of both truck axels and all the trailer axels.

I'm not sure I follow all of that. If I understood your post, the GVWR does not include hitch weight but the GAWR must.

"the total load on the rear axel (or any axel) can't exceed its GAWR"

It would seem then that the GAWR would be higher than the GVWR but even with a corrected sticker the GVWR is still greater than the GAWR.

Can you tell what you mean by "the biggest gain will be a 99.5-03 HPOP" ? Is HPOP a high pressure oil pump? Is this a tranny pump then.

gawr is not what it weighs on the scale! its the total weigh you can put safely on and axle, cause my front gawr is 5200lbs and my cat scale weigh is 4560 lbs,and my rear gawr is 5580 lbs and on cat scale its 3060lbs. build date 06/98

the HPOP (high pressure oil pump) is in the fuel system right in front of the fuel bowl....I builds pressure going to the injectors..the early 99 HPOP pushes less fuel and less pressure then the 99.5 to 03...I cant get the full benefit of my tunes..next in line is the injectors..early 99 had smaller injectors then the 99.5-03...basically our early 99 has less HP then the 99.5 -03 trucks..some thing like 25 to 30 hp..I don't remember the exact number..just doing the turbo HPOP and injectors will get that back...

GVWR is the weight of the complete vehicle, minus hitch. Now when you load a truck with a trailer, your weight on your rear axle ( GAWR ) cannot exceed what the axle is rated for. So if your axle was rated for 5k pounds, and empty the weight on the rear axle is 3500 pounds, you cannot put more then 1500 pounds of weight on that axle. Now that doesnt necesarily mean you can only put 1500 of stone in the bed, because some of that will transfer to the front. Same goes for the front. If the front axle was rated for 5k, and it weighs 4k on the scale, on the front axle, if you put a huge snow plow that made that value go over 5k on the front tires, it would be illegal. Now i dont own or do the rv thing yet (too many years of work left, hell im just starting) so i dont know how often they make you guys stop, but if they do it would be something you wouldnt want to get fined for. over weight fines are pretttttty hefty

Also, GAWR is only at each axle. It should not be more then what the vehicle is rated for (GVWR)]

And all these figures are just random numbers btw, for the example.

OK. I see now that on my sticker there is an entry for front GAWR and one for rear GAWR. Each is 4970 (which should be something different according to Eugene) . But there is only one entry of GVWR at 8800lbs. Soooo....given that my F250 is a 3/4 ton truck then it should be able to carry 1500lbs cargo. So the Total GAWR should be GVWR + 1500lbs = 8800lbs + 1500lbs = 10300lbs total GAWR (i.e Rear GAWR plus front GAWR). Is that correct?

I believe your not to exceed the GVWR, which is 8800 on mine. empty it weight about 7600, so its not quite 1500 pounds to carry to GVWR. However if you work with the DMV you can get them registered higher. Weight is such a load of crap, sometimes its whats on the door, sometimes its how much your registration costs a year. You should really rear into local laws, or talk to the dmv if your that concerned about it.

My 2002, f250 ecsb, has a front gawr of 4800, and a rear of 6084, so in theory if i loaded the axles to capacity, i would be at 10884. But the sticker on the door states 8800 gvwr. So if you pay more money to the state every year, you can get the GVWR raised. Thats in pennsylvania though. The main reason i think that ford set them to 8800 was to keep the registration to a class two, which is like 86 a year hear. IIRC
