My truck, a 1991 F-150, runs just fine off the rear tank. The front, however, appears to be out of comission. When I flip the switch to "F," it produces a lot of noise and vibration without any fuel getting into the engine. A Ford technician told me there's a check valve somewhere in the system, but it's more likely a fuel pump...and he recommends replacing both pumps. Since each pump is about $250, plus a $25 gizmo to adapt it, I'm really hoping something else is to blame here. The truck did sit for a while, so I'm thinking the system could be plugged up. Any help is appreciated--even if it's directing me to another thread--especially since I decided to fill the front tank instead of the rear!
If the dealer does it it's going to be expensive. A complete new tank and pump wouldn't cost you $250 if you looked around. Pumps are available at local parts houses and the dealer.....I'd recommend using the Ford replacement, not a knockoff........Many here say that places like NAPA and CarQuest carry good ones.
Dropping the tank and replacing the fuel pump isn't really that hard.......A Haynes manual walks you through it pretty well.......takes some time and you do need to empty that tank, but you and a buddy could do it in a few hours. I'd try to find a local mechanic if I didn't want to do it myself. Should be less costly. I sure wouldn't replace both pumps unless I had to.
Use the old siphon hose method for getting the fuel out. raise the front end and you might be able to siphon directly into the rear tank. You can buy a small liquid transfer pump if that won't work.
Good Luck

Ps....if an old sub sailor can do it....surely you carrier types can....
USS Sirago SS485 was my last boat.......finished up at Great Lakes.....teaching ET-A school to boots. Sirago was a diesel boat......Fast attacks were "the" thing then......and of course the Boomers after them.....but I didn't have enough time for "nuc" school so I got shore duty instead.
