Question 302 EFI Problems!?

ok so my truck is running like its rich, i think its the MAP sensor, so how would i go about checking that? also anything else (yes i know that it could be like 30 things) relavent to rough idle, crappy sound and no power?!

this thing is really starting to irritate me!

its lucky i bleed blue!

Check and make sure that you have good vacuum to the map sensor at an idle. With little or no vacuum, it will run really rich.
Also, check the fuel pressure regulator. If there is gas in the vacuum line, it is bad.

What makes you think it's the map sensor? Have you pulled the codes? Go here and find out how... http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13

The fuel pressure regulator is round and silver and is on the fuel rail with a single vacuum line coming out of the top. The MAP sensor is black and a little longer than it is tall, maybe 2"x3" and has a vacuum line coming out of the bottom on it. It should be mounted on the firewall.

Pull the codes before you try to self diagnose your issue. Don't waste your time buying or testing sensors before you know what your EEC-IV diagnostics tells you.

Or keep on

Good Luck
Mike

well the codes said it was a profile ignition sensor circuit malfuntion, and i have no idear what that means!

secondly i thought it might be the MAP because i have a book on Electronic systems for ford vehicles and what my truck is doing is almost exactly what it describes happens when a MAP sensor has failed

I'm thinking that pertains to the pick-up coil in the dizzy, but I'm not 100% sure.
Usually when they start failing, the act real lean like running out of fuel, then die. The after they cool off, they run great for a bit then heat up and repeat the same process again.

The computer knows.. follow it's lead first.
The ignition sensor circuit consists of 2 parts, the Hall Effect sensor inside the distributor that generates a pulse corresponding to cylinder TDC events, and the TFI module that interprets that and generates the PIP(Profile Ignition Pickup) signal and sends it to the computer. See here for a view of both... http://autorepair.about.com/library/images/bl389lib.htm
http://autorepair.about.com/library/illustrations/bl278a-lib.htm

You will have to dismantle the distributor to change the Hall Effect sensor, and it's not likely it has failed if the motor runs at all so start with the TFI module. You can test it as shown in the link, and replace it if it fails. Depending upon the year of your truck, the TFI is either on the side of the distributor or on the fender.
