Test drove a '99 PSD
Local used car lot had a '99 PSD. I test drove it just to get a feel for the super duties and diesels in general. It wasn't really a truck I would want to buy...while it was a supercab diesel, it was an XL and the only options on it were the diesel, automatic, and shift on the fly 4WD. (I hate vinyl interiors)
Anyway, I took the truck out...I noticed that man, does it feel sluggish with the automatic. From the FAQ, I guess that's normal, though years ago I drove a '00 GMC K2500 with the 6.5L turbo diesel and it felt like it had a lot more get up and go. Felt like I really had to mash the gas pedal in the SD to get it going.
Also, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how easy the truck was to drive. A few months ago, I had a rental Crown Vic for a few days and I was having a hell of a time locating the car in the lane. With the SD, I took it out and even without the mirrors adjusted properly I could easily keep it centered in the lane.
The big problem I noticed with this truck is that it felt like it had a tendency to wander all over the road. Is this a sign of a worn out steering damper?
Overall, I was pretty pleased...I knew somewhat what to expect (my brother had an '89 F-350 so I knew it wouldn't ride like a cadillac) and I'd definitely like to get one of these if I can just find one in my price range...and preferably with a stick, but I'm not really holding my breath on that one.
