First I want to say, I am not looking for another gas vs diesel thread. With that said, I need to replace my work van soon, and I was going to order a new E350 cutawy with a diesel, but I found a left over 06 E350 srw cutaway with a KUV service body on it. The truck has a 5.4 with the torqshift tranny and 4.10 gears. I can get this truck for way less than sticker price, and way less than a new one with a diesel. I do put about 25k+ miles on per year, thats why I wanted the diesel, but considering I can get this truck for over 10k less, I don't think I can go wrong. So, on to the questions. Is it reasonable to expect 150,000 miles out of this engine? Aside from power, is there any weaknesses the 5.4 is known to have? I am on call in the winter and reliability is a must. Thanks guys, Nick.
I had a 2000 F150 with the 5.4. I loved it. No problems. I put 135,000 miles on it before I traded it in. I was verry satisfied with it. I also had an 04 Expidetion that i traded the f150 in on. It also had the 5.4. It was stronger than the f150. The F150 was running a superchip. The only complaint about the Ex. was poor fuel economy. But what can you expect in a vehical that big. If I was going to buy another gas burner it would be a 5.4.
Hope this helps.
Robert
Thanks, I have heard of a few V10s with spark plug issues and wasn't sure if the 5.4 had the same problem or not. I know I will probably get some crappy fuel economy, but what are you going to do? The dealer claims I should get 13 or so with this truck, but that sounds optimistic to me considering this thing will probably weigh in right at the 9,500# gvw.
the issue with the plugs wasn't unique to the V10s... it AFFECTED all the modulars (4.2L V6, 4.6L V8, 5.4L V8, 6.8L V10)... however, they fixed those issues by 2003... never had any problems in the F-150 with the 5.4L my dad used to have, and no issues with the V10 in my F-250... I think its safe say you can get 150k+ out of these engines, and like anything else, if you take care of them...
i have an 07 f-250 4x4 manual tranny and the 5.4l. I love the truck other than the fuel mileage. I am only getting 10-12mpg on highway. And thats driving at 65-70 mph. I am not sure what the diesels are getting as far as fuel mileage, May want to check that out. good luck.
99 SuperDuty 4X4 w/5.4 and 85,000 miles , the only problem so far is the coilsticks needed too be replaced after 82,000 miles but other than the 9mpg. in the city I couldn't be happier with her and I have towed some HEAVY things without any problems.

Ouch, 10-12 mpg hwy? Yeah that sucks compared to my diesels. I am going to have to think about this. Not only because of the mileage, but this van is actually smaller than what I would order. So, I won't be able to carry as many parts and stuff, so I will end up driving around even more. It seems the cost savings of buying this truck might get used up pretty quick, labor is expensive. I hope this doesn't make you feel too bad, but with my 02 F250 4x4 auto crew cab my best ever mpg was just over 21, although normally it's around 18. Thanks guys.

And he was probably running empty when he got that...with your rig weighing close to 10k it would be worse...also the engine would be constantly working harder so it probably wouldn't last as long...I'm sure you'd get 150000 out of it though, it'd just be tired when it got there...
10-12 emptry? im getting better than that in my truck in the city...ive gotten as good as 13.4 in the city..very light...my sisters b/f just took my truck for a road trip with 5k strapped to the back...so that puts me at a little over 12k (6900 for the truck and 5k for the trailer, plus all the other goodies) he got 11 on the highway...yeah my will never complain about my 5.4...but with the amount of work you are constanley going to be doing i would look harder at a v10 or diesel....DONT COUNT OUT THE V10
I have got more than 220,000 miles on my 5.4L. With the 4.10 gears it will be a good truck for your work. I get about 12-13 mpg. Check your math on the gas cost. Diesel cost more per gallon, the diesel engine is an expensive option, but yes it would get better milage. You said $10K cheaper for the 5.4L. You can buy a lot of gas for that price. And you don't have to hear that noisey diesel run for years until the cost benefit catchs up to you, if ever.
With a 4.10 rear end you will be able to pull 11k. No, it doesn't have the torque of a PSD or a V-10, but they are not lacking in power. 300 HP and 345 lb/ft of torque is nothing to sneeze at.
If you haven't done so, drive the truck. I'm pretty sure the 3V engine will surprise you.
I regularly get 18 MPG on the highway, 10-12 while towing.
i would like to know how you guys are getting 18 mpg on highway. the best i have ever got was 13 and that was keeping my most of my shifts under 2k. empty i only get 12mpg. I do have the 4:10 tho.
I'd go for the deisel over the 5.4L any day. Pay the little extra up front and save a ton on fuel. Evens out in the end, but in the long run you'll have more power with deisel for the same overall price
