Which starter do I have?
What is the difference between a "positive engagement" and "solenoid actuated" starter? I might have to replace mine and, looking at my chiltion's manual, I'd like to know what I'm getting into.

Your truck should have a positive engagement starter, very easy to change, 15-20 minute job at most, 2 bolts(lower is from the engine side of the bellhousing, upper is from the transmission side, heads will be 1/2" if they're factory bolts, 9/16th if they've been changed) and the bolt(3/8th head) that holds the cable on the tab, and that's it.

The positive engagement type used the magnetic field of the motor to engage the starter drive, while the solenoid type uses a solenoid to engage the drive and turn on the power to the motor(has a solenoid mounted directly to the starter)
