IFS Dana 50 pivot bushing

I have replaced the ball joints and tie rod ends. I also have a quote of $380 to replace the pivot bushing. Does that sound correct? And are you all modifying this suspension set up to beef it up at all?
Or should I just leave it and it won't break for a long while LOL?

Flea, I just got done doing ball joints, tirod ends, axle u-joints(wheel ends), bearings being packed and new bearing seals, and a bushing alingment. Me and two really good friends did it all but the alingnment and it still cost 580.00 bucks. It was alot of work to do, but it does drive better and turn much easier. If it's as much work as what I did that's probably not to bad of a price. good luck I will be watching this thread.

$380 is a little steep for $40 or so bushing set. it's not the easiest thing to do but i was able to change them out in a few hours by myself. the hardest part is realigning the bolts back into the bushing. i used a couple small bottle jacks sideways between the spring and crossmember to align the axle side to side and another floor jack to center up and down. this is with the front end on jack stands supporting the frame and not the axle. i replaced my axle pivot bushings with energy suspension bushings about 10,000 miles before i put a dana 60 in. if you're not in a rush, i could pop out my pivot bushings and send them to you to save you a few bucks. ask away if you have any more questions

96P_Stroke... did you have a lift on your Dana 50?? I may be in need of those support members that connect the pivot bushings to the cross member... I have a 4" lift on mine..

Looks like we all need to find a stockpile of Dana 60's and have a fix it get together. I am sure we can find somewhere to do it. My 1 bay shop won't fit all of us though. Someone find the 60's and I will find the place and I'm sure we can all come up with the tools.

Neal,
Sure. won't cost me anything to get there.

96P and Neal,
I was wondering how long this maintenance on my truck will last. After only owning this truck for almost a year I have dropped a lot on the front end maintenance. About $1400 after the pivot bushing gets put it.
What problems will the pivot bushing cause. It is way down below where the bolt is located. I have had my outter t. rods done and ball joints up. and low. Should this last a while. I drive mainly on the paved roads and never really take it off.
I just bought a new set of tires want to keep them for a while.
Thanks,
Fletch

To be honest I feel very lucky. I bought this truck new and haven't had to do anything to the front end. I do take it offroad now and then. I recently was greasing the front end and overfilled the cracked and dryrotted tie rod end on the drivers side and the rubber busted and grease shot 10 feet. Now I grease that end every two weeks or better. I guess what I am saying is that the factory parts lasted 10 years with no problem. I would imagine yours will do the same if done right. I am looking down a loaded barrel when it comes to my front end and various other parts. They are ALL still factory and still hanging there. Knock on wood. Just keep up the maintenance and it should last a long time. BTW, I do alot of pulling and highway miles also but when I take her to play I don't play nice. So you should be fine.

Here is a pic of my pivot bushing. It was pointed out to me that it is low. Does it seem a little low to you all?

What problems will the bushing sliding down cause? Mis-alignment?

Come to think of it I do have a lift of sorts.
Someone before me added a leaf to the front axle. I have three leaves under there.
Would this cause a problem with the bushing?

I am just tired of paying for tires.

the helper springs wont hurt the bushing but will change your alignment, easy fix there, get her re-set and good to go
i thought about a dana 60 swap, but the best i could find used was 1500 bucks, not my idea of a deal, i personally like the ride and performance of my 50 set-up, its nice for offroading too and i have no problems out of either of my 2 250's, my current one finally broke at the 215k mark and i will be pullin her out for overhaul shortly
