in a perfect world, i'd get 180 mpg and still be able to run 75mph pulling 16' tandem axle bumper trailer loaded with tractor. HOWEVER:
1. 16 - 17 on road @ approx. 55-57 mph no load. under 12 with loaded truck and towing loaded trailer in rolling hills at same speed (or same 12 mpg empty and running 70 mph.)
2. Non turbo 7.3 idi
3. no mods yet
4. 1990 F-250, 5 speed manual, 4x4 with 4.10 gears
I usually got 20 plus in my 83 6.9 with 307 gears,stock
I get around 18 in my 94 stock turbo 4x4 one ton. 410 gears auto trans
The Johnny cash special with the 6.9 and 355 gear t-18 gets about the same
but what is ironic, these trucks alot of times, will do alot better in town idling around then out on the interstate with the motor rapped up and you feeling the full effects of the 410 gears trying to keep from getting ran over by the talented young lady driving while on the phone and doing her make-up.
We might be better off if Henry Ford would have said the heck with his idea and we could be on here talking about the dry weather and hay being short for the chrome shoed, 17 hand, stallion that can cover a mile in 2 minutes flat and actually how long you should park your wagon the creek to get the wheels to tighten up to get the pull to the right out of it.

1. 16 city -20 empty besides 500lb lumber rack highway doing around 60 (thats the speed limit here in oregon..i think)
2. n/a 7.3
3.k&n intake
4. 1991 250 long bed ext cab 4x4 auto e4od not sure what the rear end in it is..proly a tall one lol
1) 15ish all around empty running B100 most of the time. Just did a trip to Lake Oswego towing the horse trailer with one horse in it, say 5,000 pounds, 5 people in the cab plus a couple of coolers in the back and got just under 10 for that trip. I keep my speed 60-65, right around 2k rpm.
2) NA 7.3
3) My truck has a "Ray Wel PowerPak MKII" on it. I found very little info on this when I searched for it, but it looks like a modified intake, similar to the ram air setups I see here and a larger exhaust.
1) Still waiting on first fill up after I filled it up on the way home from where I bought it. I know im getting better than 10. The gauge is starting to drop, and when it does, whoa does it drop like a lead balloon.
2)N/A 6.9
3)None yet, soon adding ram air/K&N filter, and tach to help me know how hard im pushing it down the highway.
4) 1985 F-350 Standard cab, dually, 6x4 (4x2), 4.10, T-9 4-speed
Thanks for all the great replies. I think this is a great help for those of us new to Diesels, helps make sure ours are running correctly and the potential thats out there. I'm a little surprised by how big a difference the tall rear end gear makes. I knew it would help some, but it sure seems to be a bigger difference than I thought it would. Also a noticeable difference between the 250's and 350 dually's (not a surprise). I wonder how much heavier a 350 dually is over a 250?
Don't be suprised on what taller gearing does for milage. I wish peeps would have posted theri cruising RPM's. Anything over 2K RPM's and milage drops substantially with an IDI.

I get 16-18 MPG cruising 70 MPH @ 2300 RPM's.
'93 F250 in my sig.
yep, you're right about that. wish i got the 18 at 2300Rs. unfortunately, truck bed always full of weight and at 2300, i drop to 15 and lower :-( 4.10s are great for pulling, but lousy on fuel economy. that's why i try to run under 2000 and keep it to about 60. plus the fact that the super troopers are now running bikes on the highway and are reaaaaaal sneaky!
Thats why a tach is in order for the '85. I'm curious what the RPM's are at highway speeds. I might need a change of shorts after I find out. It screams pretty loud, and I've been told I have a lead foot.
1. 15-16 mpg in mixed city/hwy driving unloaded. ~10.5 with a heavy older camper in the bed and towing my Jeep up and down the mountains
2. No turbo
3. Dual ram air intake & 3" exhaust with the IP turned up a flat
4. F250 6.9, single axle, C6 auto, 3.55 gears, 2wd
Second truck in my sig.....
1. Don't know MPG yet since I just got the new tranny in it and haven't even run a tank of fuel through it yet. I've got about 75 miles on this tank & will be towing my Jeep over the mountains (no camper though) this next week - I'll post back some MPG numbers then.
3. Turbo is aftermarket, 3" Banks exhaust, no intake mods & IP has probably been turned up but needs to be turned up a bit more, and the dually axle and bed are from an F350
my 6.9 c6 3.55 f250 ext cab 4wd get 10-12 my 7.3 f250 4.10s 5spd 4wd will go 150 miles to a tank guage broke my powerstroke dually 4 door gears are prolly 4.10s will go 200 to a tank never figured mpg
