Agreed. I run the Ford Motorsport Torsen T2 posi. A vast improvement over the stock LS. However, an open differential pickup with any power, I'm not a fan of.

Both LS rear ends conaski.

Yes, Usually one tire spins unless i'm on gravel, or useing my leet driveing skills.

My 91 hooked up with the LS rear end but it also had 3.05 gears in it also. This truck has had 3.55's in the LS rear end that broke, and the rear end in it now. The tag said LS on it, i have it saved, but its open diff.
*shrugs* Performance wise, NO difference. Or perhaps thats my driveing skill showing through instead of the mechanics.

Friction modifier dosn't seem like it would make things less friction like....
my gut tells me you guys have it backwards.

My understanding is that the clutches are biased towards locking the diff more than keeping it open (I know locking is not the correct term here but whatever). This is why without the friction modifier you will get clicks and chattering when going around turns or spinning the tires. The friction modifier allows the clutches to slip so that you can make tight turns without the diff trying to lock the tires up. For this same reason you don't want to add too much FM because then the clutches will just slip all the time and you might as well have an open diff. Make sense?

Makes complete sense!! Thats why I slapped in a Torsen T-2 posi when I rebuilt my rearend. Then sold my stock LS tracklock on craigslist.

No clutches. No friction modifier. A much more aggressive Limited slip with lock up quality and everyday driveability. Worm-gear full time torque sensing- tire light up fun! Take a look below

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-FORD-RACING-M-4204-T31-TORSEN-T-2-8-8-DIFFERENTIAL_W0QQitemZ290142088447QQcmdZViewItem

I used to put the truck in 4wd to pull it out of one of my favorite boat launches with the LS. Either that or powerbrake the hell out of it to get that LS to wake up....even years ago. The Torsen locks up (or to be frank...divides power) evenly, quickly and even completely underwater or mud.

How was the swap for that Torsen diff Mike? A lot of work or more of a direct swap?

Chris-
Quite easy. I did it the same time I bumped to a 4.10 gearset. Crosspin only needs notching for 4.56 and up ratios.

I got lucky (in a sick way) and a buddy of mine totalled his CJ-7. He had 8.8 axles in front and rear. I got the posi setup for $200 with 1500 miles on it. A decent LS rebuild kit with upgraded clutches would have costed $100+.

Very nice upgrade over the stock LS...IMO.

Mike

It must be Chrysler that uses the term "trac loc" for their limited slip rear ends...

Nope. It's most certainly a Ford term as well. If you get the part from Ford Racing, they call it a "Traction Lok". Other distributors (broncograveyard, randy's ring and pinion etc. etc.) call the same diffy a trac lock.

Here's the LS that shows up in our 8.8" rear ends from the Factory. The link below is for the 28 spline version, but the 31 spline has the same name.

The motor still lives. God i wish i would have kept it, It was a beast!
The fan and the drive shaft are now in my truck.
Stupid fan clutch! oh well. the lighter fan made so much diff in power.
and my drive shaft took a hike down the Eway.
So i had one made.

4.10's were a great improvement for my setup on 33" tires. I originally had 3.55's and I had to powerbrake the truck hard to smoke the 33" tires. On 4.10's...just a light tap and SCREEECH...there goes 5000 miles worth of rubber. Also, 70 mph on the freeway and my rpms are at 2300. 2600 for 80 mph. Not too bad.

I'll race ya for pink slips? 5.0 vs. 5.0

I could use another roller ready block and truck donor to build a stroker.

Hey Mike, aside from the difference in power going from 3.55s to 4.10s, did your gas mileage increase with those 33" tires or did it still decrease?

Its a wash. Slightly better with 3.55's...not even 1mpg though. I'd take the 4.10's anyday. Less wear and tear on the E4OD. Less shifting out of OD. Much less shifting overall. MPG about the same.

Man... Then I'm not sure I can convince myself to pay for it. I was hoping to see a little better gas mileage plus the power, which was my own justification for spending the money... I'd need to find the gears for real cheap, in good shape, and then I'd have to find a shop that'd swap 'em for cheap because I don't think I could do it myself. Would it be nice if all that could just COME together!?
