The axel code on the door sticker of my f-350 is C5. Can anyone tell me the ratio and what does this ratio mean compared to other ratios in layman terms?
The transmission is a C6....is this a good combination for towing?

FTE has an on-site axle decoder. I can't help you, as my parts catalogs only go as far as 1991.
The 4.10 is a great ratio (except in the field of gas mileage), and I'm not sure about your question on its relation to other ratio's, Are you wonderin if 4.10 is high, low, or in between other ratios? If your question is that, I'm not 100% positive, but I think 4.10 is the lowest ratio Ford offered for the F350 (or its atleast the lowest I've ever seen or heard of stock)
I have no proof, just speculation that 6250 is how much weight the axle can directly handle or something of sorts, hopefully someone smarter than me can inform you of that number.
1991, but what about 1996? The OP's profile says 1996, and I wasn't going to take the chance 1991 would be the same code. Ford changes axle codes almost as fast as they change part numbers.

Thanks Dean. Based on your reply I would guess that this ratio is more geared toward towing and hauling....since you're bang on about the crappy fuel mileage. I'm actually looking at a 3500 lb camping trailer and am wondering if I'm good to pull it with my truck and gear and family of 4 (crew cab)....before I buy.

Was wondering about that too....but I think this (1991) might be the year that this "set-up" was introduced?

Well, then the 4.10 will be perfect for pullin that camper, heck you probably won't even know its there unless it is extremely windy. What kind of tranny does the truck have?
My 96 Powerstroke had axle code C5, that is like mentioned 4.10:1. I had the zf5 5 speed tranny and 33s. 4th gear in that tranny is 1:1 like your 3rd gear is and I was able to go 60mph in 4th, really high rpm mind you.
Something else to think about here. Ford stopped using C6s in the late 80s, if the truck is a 90s model you have overdrive, which will be about .76:1. Youll be good for about 80-90mph for a safe top speed.
4:10 is a good gear ratio.

My tranny is a C6....The truck is a 1996 and to my understanding, it is the last year they used the C6. I checked the door sticker and it's Code G and 17 bolts on the pan. Although it's only a 3 speed automatic, I read it's a decent heavy duty tranny, so should work well with the camper!
a c6 is a monster tranny, good for 800hp stock I read somewhere. None the less, its a real good strong tranny, I never knew they were in 3/4 and 1 tons untill 96, I just checked a source and apparently they are. So like I said, your top gear, with 4.10s and 33s (what I had) will be about 60mph.

Thanks for the info everyone....funny you mention 60 mph pud. I find it's the perfect cruising speed for the truck. It will give me more, if I want....but she seems to purr along beautifully at 60.
lol yeah, mine was a diesel too so you can probably get a few more mph because the gassers like rpm more than diesels do.
I only know the 60mph in 4th (1:1) because there were a couple times going through the rockies I forgot to shift back into 5th lol.
