I replaced my vacuum pump about 30k miles ago. Well, yesterday I was going down the road and started hearing some noise. When I got home, checked under the hood and vacuum pump was making a heck of a racket. Where should I go to replace it so it will last more than 30k? I bought my last pump at a local store, but dont know where they get these pumps. Do I need to go to the dealership to get a decent one?
I got mine at NAPA, I believe they have the longest warranty for that pump, but you may want to paint the diaphragm housing, Mine quickly got that crappy rust color, I just like it to look purdy under the hood
I had one put on that lasted 364 days........I took it back in and was one day under the one year parts warrenty so it was replaced for free. That one has been on for 1 1/2 year so far. They were factory parts.
One of the most common causes of premature vacuum pump failures is a pin hole leak in the system. It pulls dirt into the pump and self-destructs. These vacuum pumps are very efficient and you won't notice a small leak unless it gets large enough to cause some symptoms ie. hard brake pedal, no air switching from the defrost vents ect. Before you install your next pump, do a leak down check of the system.

Thanks
I bought the my replacement from Ford. The first one lasted 274k miles so I thought I would see if this one holds up any better.
Cuda, I have a good brake pedal, but I don't notice a difference between Max A/c and Norm A/c. In most cars the Max is recirculated air and I can't tell a bit of difference between the max and norm. Is this due to vacuum or what could it be?

I doubt it's a vacuum leak that's causing it. If you have a vacuum leak the defrost would be on all the time. You likely have a problem with just that part of the HVAC. Look for an obstruction in the intake vent located at the passengers feet. I've seen a piece of plastic bag get sucked into the opening, plugging it.
I stopped at Napa the other day to pick up a reman pump, the price was $140. Then I stopped at the Ford dealership and for a new one it ran $180. I think this time I'm going to spend the extra $40 and get a new one. Its not bad when your pump (or any part for that matter) goes out close to home, but I always fear Murphy will find me when I'm 150 miles from the nearest garage.
