Hello all,
I put on some 305/55r20 tires and wheels recently, and now the bad news, it kinda wanders and darts around abit on the highway. Not real bad, but enough to cause concern.
Would an aftermarker steering stabilizer cure this problem? Is there one aven available for the 05 SD? I don't do any offroading, but it is a FX4 package, and I just installed new bilstiens recently.
Anyone have similiar issues???
Thanks...Kevin
There is probably one on your truck already. Look up under the front of the truck, it is tucked up out of site on the steering bits.
Instead of trying to band-aid the problem, mask the wandering with a stabilizer, you should try to find out why the truck is now wandering. If it is the new tires that needs to be corrected. Does your truck need an alignment? Are your ball joints good? Tie rod ends? Drag link?
The wider tires tend to ride up and down on the crest in the road. I have the problem in my trans am with really wide tires (295/40/zr18), and I have seen it in some trucks with bigger wider tires. But it is worth checking the front end out, sometimes bigger tires show up small problems!
Your right, there is one tucked up in there, and it has monroe stamped init. I suppose it's stock, since the truck is bone stock. Everything seems tight, but I suppose it could need an alignment. I have only 55k miles on it. It drove fine with the stock size tires on it, and there isn't any funny wear patterns on either set of tires.
What is a good qiality replacement for the stock stabilizer? Maybe a heavier, better upgrade??
Thanks...Kevin
Also since your truck has 55,000 miles on the clock checking the ball joints for any slop would be good. I wish they would put grease fittings on the upper and lower ball joints so you could grease them.
I would go with a new HD steering stabilizer first.
Also, don't overlook the obvious. If your truck steered OK before the new tires but doesn't now, you may have a bad tire. It has happened to me, mine caused a pull to the right.
You may want to discuss your problems with the tire shop that sold you the tires, see what they recommend.
