Towing in O/D
Good Morning. I recently bought a 2002 F250 CC 4x4 V10,I pull a 29ft. Jayco travel trailer with an approx loaded weight of 7000-7500lbs. Has anyone out there towed in O/D pulling this kind of weight??? I would never dream of it in my old Super Crew F150 5.4 3.55. Thanks, Steve
I turn off the OD at the bottom of the hills and bring the rpm up for the climb. If the load is too much the tranny will shift out of OD into 2nd or 3rd when needed. I know my truck and I can tell when it needs to shift so I use OD accordingly.
As long as it is not "hunting" gears (going in OD, then to 3rd and back to OD) every few minutes, I just leave it alone and let it do it's thing.
I just did a 1800 mile trip from NC to OH and PA, then back home. Averaged 7.4 in the mountains and 8.6 on the flats. My TT weighs in at about 10k.

I only use OD on the flats when I know the trannie isn't going to be shifting back and forth between gears. I know 3 people with Fords, 2 PSD and 1 V10 that used OD all the time and burned their trannies out at $3,500+.

Tow in the tallest gear that the torque converter will stay locked. If the torque converter unlocks the heat will build up immediately. Get to know your truck and downshift the transmission manually when needed.
