I disconnected it and it seems to be attached to something in the tank. I do not have a lot of experience with old cars or trucks. But when grandpas' old Ford farm truck is up for the taking I guess I gotta learn about old trucks.
The pickup tube is attached to the gas tank, not to the sender itself. the In-Cab tanks are unique in this respect, as most pickup tubes are part of the sending unit.

The sending unit is the part your removed. The float connects to the hooked shaped arm, the arm to the sender. The outside of the sender has an electrical connector on it. The sender is available from Ford = D7TZ-9275-G. It comes with the float and gasket, or the float and the gasket are available separate. C0AZ-9202-B float & C1TF-9276-A gasket. The floats tend to fill with gasoline over time, and sink to the bottom of the tank, one reason the dash gauge reads wrong, or not at all.

Thanks guys, I got her running again and driving. I think it was that the gas lines were plugged with junk form ten yrs of sitting in the barn. I blew them out with the air compressor, and she took off!

It is the combined effort here on this forum that keeps these ol trucks running and on the road.

One thing to watch for if the trucks stops running again: If it has been sitting for 10 years, there could (is) rust or junk in the tank. even if you blow it out with an air compressor, the junk could still settle back at the bottom of the pickup tube and block it again. I actually had to put a new tank in my 65 to get it to work, because it was so rusted inside. Hopefully though, that wont happen to you.
Good luck and have fun with it!

I'd like to add my own postscript here, too. I put a new fuel pump on and she's running like a champ. Had to retime her but otherwise, problem solved. Thank you to all the advice!
