Hello, can anyone tell me what the redline would be on a stock '77 460, and what do I have to do bump it up to about 5500rpm for more horsepower.
Also, can you tell me roughly what it would cost to rebuild it so that it cranks out 350-400 horsepower? Thanks
Your basic roadblocks in that motor are intake, cam, and compression. Put a decent 9.0:1 piston in it, run an Edelbrock Performer intake with 750 vacuum secondary carb., and any kind of decent cam with roughly .500 lift and 215 degrees of duration and you'll hit those numbers. One note, you don't have to wind a 460 to 5500 to hit the hp numbers you're looking at. I'd think you'll be in the $1500-$2000 range for a rebuild depending how many parts you choose to replace, if you recondition the valve seats and guides, use new valves, get it balanced, etc.
That engine prob redlines at around 5000... I wouldnt push it much past that.
I built a 460... Pulled a junkyard motor, and invested the following:
Mild Cam (1500-4500 rpm)
Good ignition system
Speed Pro Piston Rings
Gasket Set
Bearing Set
Water Pump
3 wks of labor (porting/polishing/valves/etc.)
Engine now kicks 384 hp, 477 ft. lbs. torque at the rear wheels..
I only spent a TOTAL of 850 bucks..including the block..
Maybe I got lucky! Good Luck.
proud owner...what year is your 460? what would you estimate your CR to be? those are pretty good HP #'s for a mostly stock sounding engine. what kind of ignition system are you using and how much do you think it helped. also, are you using the stock intake, and what kind of carb are you using?
ps...sorry to bother you but im slowly building a big block and am curious about some stuff
