Have a 97 f-350 with the 460 in it Stats and runs fine when driving it, but at an idle and more when you put the truck in reverse but don't push the gas peddle the engine flutters. Like it is not firing right. So I put in new plugs, wires, high flow air filter, flowmaster exhaust, 02 sensor. Still does it. When I took the old plugs out they had like a gumish residue on the threads of the plug. Any thoughts? this truck sits and idles more than it gets driven down the road. Could the CAT be half cloged? Do these trucks have an EGR valve? The truck also seems to run really Hot even after the flowmaster which should help to keep it cooler. Anyone have any ideas?
Also changed the oil and filter not like that would have been the problem anyway but just was time for it.
how many miles? if over 100k you could have a stretched timing chain. that would do what youre describing. the residue on the plugs is probably anti-sieze.
put some miles on it at highway speed & use up the pld gas.......
the poor thing is probably chomping at the bit to get unleashed you only put about 1000 gal of gas thru her in the last 11 years.....burn some fresh gas probably wont flutter then
its probably all carboned up from just idling and not getting driven... as said take it out on the interstate... as fast as you can go without getting pulled over... for a couple hours. then come back and pick up a bottle of seafoam... pull the vacuum brake booster line off (or other handy manifold vacuum line) and suck a little seafoam at a time through the line until the bottle is about half gone... then throw the rest of the bottle into the gas tank... that should clean your injectors and clean out the carbon from the engine and make it run like it should.
