Boxing frame rails

I have seen a lot of street rodders with "boxed frames". I now know what that is and that it looks nice, but my question is:

What are the advantages of "boxing" one's frame?

Please fill me in on this one. Thanks.

Basically just stiffens the frame by not having the open channel able to twist.
