I am thinking about trading my 2001 F-350 CC LB Lariet in for a 2002 or a 2003 F-250 CC SB. I have grown acustomed having the 4wd floor shifter. I am wondering if Ford did away with this feature after 2001, or if I am just not having any luck. Also I was looking at some pics of trucks online and saw a button next to the 4x4 shifter **** on the dash. What is that? Thanks in advance.
The floor shifter is still available, just very hard to find. Almost all dealers order the trucks with ESOF for dealer stock. About the only way to find one with the shift lever is to order one. I searched all over IL when I was buying my truck and couldn't find any new ones with it, and it was too late to order an 07 so I just got one with the ESOF and I'll switch over the hubs first time I have issues after the warranty is up. Most of the issues are traced back to the vacuum system and the auto locking hubs, the shift motor seems to fail a lot less often.

When I bought my 02 F250 new, I looked at a lot of trucks on the dealer lots, and it was very rare to see the floor shift 4x4 (at least in the XLT and Lariats). I think when a dealer ordered trucks for their invetory they chose the ESOF system because they feel thats what you want. I have looked at a couple of 08's on dealer lots lately, and I have found the same thing today. You may have trouble finding the truck you want with the good old fashion manual 4x4. Good luck.

I have a 2007 with the floor shifter. My truck was ordered though. When I went looking, every truck on the lot had ESOF. As far as the button next to the 4x4 selector, if it is round, it is the on/off switch for the reverse sensors. If it is oblong, it is the button for the power sliding rear window. Hope that helps!
I have an 04 with the Floor Shift and Manual Hubs.. That's what made me happy when I bought it.. I hate ESOF and Auto Hubs.. I would rather get out, turn my hubs and pull my lever and KNOW it's engaging opposed to wondering if there's enough vacuum pressure lol

My father's toyota tacoma has electronic 4x4 (with a manual shift transmission). I engaged 4L once and counldn't figure out how to get back to 4H/2H. It required a combination of brake and clutch peddle with the t-case selector **** and waiting a certain amount of time until a light stopped flashing. I have no idea how they took the simple movement of a manual t-case lever and make it so confusing with adding the electronic buttons and switches.
The ESOF is a more popular option because most people want to keep it simple and not have to get out and lock hubs, and also you get the drivers side glovebox which is not included if you have the floor shifter.

Not really "keep it simple", ESOF is much more complicated and less reliable than the good ole manual hubs/transfer case. The big Pro about the ESOF is if you have to pull out quick you can put it into 4wd to keep from smokin the tires, If the ESOF works.
After witnessing the problems my dad had with his 99' SD and his current 03" SD (From New) ESOF, the only option for me was to go with the Manual set-up on my new 04'.
I only mean't the "keep it simple" part as far as what the driver has to do to engage 4wd, which is what buyers see at the dealers lot because it's somthing the salesperson can hype about.
I have the ESOF and have had several instances where the hubs wouldn't lock in so I usually just plan to lock my hubs manually now so I know they're locked.
But the drivers side glovebox works like a champ !
I have had both the manual in my 2001 F250 and the ESOF Auto with my present 2003 F250. Luckily I haven't had any problems with either one but I do agree that having the ability to manually switch over is nice.
Simple is locking the front hubs when you think you might need 4 wheel drive, then when you want 4H you reach down and flick the lever towards you. It's easy and works every time you need it.
My opinion (no offense meant towards anyone else); If I am so freakin' lazy I can't get out and lock my own hubs, it's time to put the Super Duty out to pasture and get a minivan.
