My truck has always leaked oil from the tranny bellhousing. While I know it is gravity that gets it there, I am at a loss of where the true leak is. It seems to be a little worse since I had the tranny rebuilt. I have heard much about rear main or crankshaft leaks with Fords, so I am guessing this could be the problem.
Oil. It poured tranny fluid b4, that is why I had it rebuilt. The tranny fluid must have masked the oil leak. It would have been nice if the tranny shop did the rear seals when the tranny was off. Anyway, I assume it is ok to live with the rear main leak for a while..right. I have not added any oil since the last oil change (about 500 miles). Do rear mains typically leak more when the truck is sitting or is it about the same all the time?
Exactly how much oil is leaking? The rear main on my fire truck leaked real bad, turned out to be a rock in between the 2 gasket pieces. Truck would leak about a quart every 20 or so miles.
It is not leaking enough that I have to add oil. It drips from between the bellhousing and the bellsousing inspection plate. I don't see any measurable amount leaking while running.

I have to ask....How in the He11 did a rock get in between the two gasket pieces?

Very good question. Even the service manager (one of the best in the State) said "Your not going to believe this but..."
Only thing I can figure is the previous owners (Fire Department) had one of their repair guys replace the seal and they dropped it and got a rock stuck to it and didn't notice it when they installed it.
If that leak isn't too bad, you could just keep an eye on it for now. I had a 79 and my dad a 78 and they both burned and leaked oil in small amounts.
