My Microsoft wireless mouse packed it in I think. Had it since about Halloween. Put a new battery in it in May, but never used it since. So I went to use it today, not working. Again, I put in a new battery. I know it's new, because I bought the battery today, and it went from the package into the mouse. The computer recognizes the USB input, and there's a green light on in the receiver. But the red light under the mouse won't light up, and it won't move the cursor. I can't for the life of me find the manual, I've pressed both "connect" buttons underneath. Nothing.
1. Did you put the battery in the right way? (I've screwed 'em up, and I worked in electronics most of my life)
2. Is there any kind of reset button? My Logitech has a little reset button underneath.
3. Is there some kind of dippy install -- again my Logitech had one -- it may have required me to bring the mouse around after some other mumbo jumbo in the install.
Or it could just be a POS. I have a Logitech optical, and I really like it.
It's a Microsoft wireless. The battery is in properly. I've pressed the "reset" button lots of times. But it doesn't say reset, it says "connect". There's another on the receiver also. There was no install hardware, as it is a plug and play type.
Can't really say it's a POS until now, as it worked fine until I stopped using it in May. Just that now, since I want to start using it again... No worky. I did put a battery in it this morning, not sure of the age of it, but the red light underneath flashed once and that was it. I put a new one in a couple hours ago, still nothing.
when I bought my mouse I had to pull out the little tab inside the battery compartment then insert your battery. If that don't work take it back (it might have a warenty) so you
can get a new one. or buy a new one. check the installation to make shure it is installed right. Or delet and reinstall with disk. But I do know this when I bought a wireless mouse I
put the battery in before installing it and it did light up for almost 2 years now.
hope this helps. mrs. wizz
Just remember to return the hammer to the tool box.
"Now that's funny. I don't care who you are."
All kidding aside. . . I bought one of the smaller Microsoft wireless mouse gizmos for my wife to use with her laptop.
We found out that the 'receiver' end that goes into the pc has to be within 3 feet, plus, if you put a coffee cup or other object between the receiver and the mouse, the mouse doesn't operate 'quite right'.
Danged mouse. I can't stand it when they do what THEY want to do.
I guess I'll have to take the mouse to obedience school.

I had a Microsoft wireless desk set, and I never did like the mouse. It always seemed kind of flaky with the connection, no matter where I put the receiver. So I went with Logitech, and it has been much better.
All my keyboards now are conventional wired Microsoft keyboards, and they work great. In fact, they have been more durable than anything else I've used so far.
Everyone should really upgrade to a rechargeable mouse. No more am I a slave to Duracell, and their battery-pushing. I have a Logitech unit, and its full wireless/optical... and all you do is throw it on its charger when it gets low (very similar to an electric razor). They are only like $30-60 now.
I have had a couple Microsoft wireless mice over the years. Currently I have a MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0. I prefer the wireless mice because all of the corded mice I have ever had break the wire right at the mouse after a while, Logitech, MS, or others. I do not use the rechargeable mouse types because the mouse is out of commission while recharging. I do use NiMH rechargeable batteries in my wireless mouse with a set in my recharger ready for instant replacement at all times. I have had ZERO problems with the wireless link or interference from foreign objects etc. A wireless mouse is not the best choice for gaming because there is a lag in response at times that can be death in a game. I do use a good battery charger that will intelligently charge batteries and keep them topped off while in the charger.
I have never found it being 'out of commission' to be an issue. I can get 3+ days straight on a single charge. Just throw the mouse on its charger when you arent AT the computer, or when its turned off... and you should never experience down time.

Gasp!!!!!!!!!!
Turn OFF a computer?????
Didn't you know that (the laws of MS state) that you MUST keep your pc on 24/7/365!!!!
What would we do if we turned off our computers?????
The space time continuum (sp??) would be in flux. Dogs and cats would start living together. The sun would flame out.
Our lives would cease to exist.
