Diesel Additives

Ive had my diesel truck for about 2 weeks now. And the other day my friend thats a mechanic asked me if i was using diesel additive in the gas and i didnt think i needed to but he said i should start right away. So i went the store thinking i would just buy some diesel additive and everything would be fine...but i get to the store and they have atleast 10 different diesel additives ranging from $5-10. And they are a few different brands...there are some from Motomaster, Preston, Redline...those are just the ones i remember...but almost every bottle says it does the same thing like ...restore power, remove deposits, Cetane boost, Clean fuel injectors, less fuel consumption, lubricate. And i wasnt sure if its all the same and i couldnt make the decision myself so i figured i would ask you guys if your even using additive and what kind you use?

Also my truck ran fine when i first bought it but a few days after i bought the truck i was cleaing out the console between the seats to get rid of the PO`s garbage and i found a can of starting fluid and i got kinda worried when i found that because it made me think the PO had some sort of problem with the truck starting and now after driving the truck for a few weeks im noticing that the truck doesnt want to start sometimes...its usually only after it sits overnight or when its sitting at my work for 9 hours and then i try to start it to leave and it doesnt want to start. What could be causing the truck to hesitate when starting? and would the additive help with that?

Most people here, including myself, use "Diesel Kleen". Its in a gray bottle and you can get it at walmart, or your local auto parts store, for me, its autozone.

Its important to use it nowadays with ULSD. Not much lubrication for the IP.

For the hard start prob.....do you still have the original gray painted return line, the rubber line between the injectors? If so, they are probably leaking air in which makes it harder to start because the pump has to reprime the IP. Glow plugs/controller/relay might be bad.
Glowplugs $10 a piece @ autozone
Relay $20 @ autozone
Controller $95 at www.mwfi.com

your starting problems sounds like return lines leaking so you might want to look into replacing them.

I always know I can find diesel kleen or Howe's at a truck stop. I always buy the gallons even if I get it from Wal-mart. Good luck

the return lines run from each injector then back to the tank. undernieth the hard metal fuel line that goes to the top of the injector the is a black or grey cap and a piece of fuel line. under the caps are two o rings the need to be replaced. all you need to do is get a return line kit take off the injector lines (hard metal going to top of injector) becarful not to bend or kink them then take off the caps cut the two orings cut new fuel line to right size and but everything back on.

mwfi.com sells the return kit like I stated above. The kit comes with new everything, caps, o-rings, lone piece of ruber line you cut to fit, and clamps.

They might not be leaking fuel out while air is entering the system (air molecules smaller than fuel) and causing the fuel to drain to the tank and loose its prime.

If you cut the old o-rings, be careful not to knick the injectors.
