My 2003 Expedition misses once in a while and there is an engine-speed dependant popping on any AM radio station. Im supposing it is in one of the coils causing interference. Its tough to listen to Rush! Any suggestions?
Dave
Initially it does sound like a COP, but answer this first....how many miles does it have and what engine? If you have any other descriptions of the problem it would be appreciated? Such as crackling, popping, static, how often it occurs....
Let's see if we can clear Rush up for ya!
It has the 5.4L and has about 85,000 miles. The loud clicking in the radio is constant (on AM) and varies with engine speed. I have tried replacing the boots with a new one. I replaced half of them one at a time, turned on the truck and still the same thing. The back 4 are a pain in the cheeks to get at so the problem might still be there. Hope that helps.
This may be a pain for ya to do, but have you tried unplugging the antenna from the back of the radio? My antenna lead was bad and it made my AM seem like an OD of Rice Crispies and static. The problem did come back a few months later though it never bothered my FM....these Ford radios aren't exactly top of the line and are very prone to this. When I replaced mine with a Kenwood, the noise went with it.
As for replacing the boots, I don't believe that is your issue. A condensor may be all you need, but this could be a good excuse for a new and better head unit?
