Well it happened again, 2002 V10 CC LB 2WD. Last week we went camping at a local mountan resort, I pulled my 10,000 lb 5th from Sea level to 8,400 ft. without a problem and then as I backed my rig into our spot, all forward transmission operation stopped, it was like being in neutral. 1st gear had enough to un-hitch but was very loose, (slipping). I coasted downhill in 1st giving it throttle to try and get it engaged but it would not so i came to a stop and at idle it would move a little. As I applied throttle it would catch a little then freewheel. After 20 minutes of this, operation returned to normal and we enjoyed our week, we drove about 250 miles during the week, normal driving and backing up, (No trailer). Everything went fine so I did not worry much about the pull home. The pull home was uneventfull no problems and when i arrived at my storage my site was clear allowing me to pull-through and park my rig without backing. This is the second time this has happened, the first was when I pulled my trailer from storage to my house, (5 miles) I had to back it down my street and the same thing happened.
All gauges were normal, fluid level is fine and the fluid looks and smells like new. (Mobil 1). I have two more trips this summer and replacing the trans would be a hardship right now. Any Ideas?
By the way, I have a 97 F250 LD 5.4 that was my primary tow vehicle for many years, pulled this same trailer to Tahoe and back several times, and if need be will pull again!
The only apply components that engage for 1st gear are the fowrward clutch and the low one -way clutch. Not a guarantee that there is a clutch problem, it could be a valve problem or a solenoid fault as well. If it's a slipping condition, I would be thinking a forward clutch fault more than anything, but not for sure. Sounds like a tranny shop is in your future.
