valve adjustment questions?

i am currently building a 460 for my truck and i was wondering what i have to do for adjusting the rocker arms. i know that i need to prime the engine first before i fire it, but do i need to have done this before i adjust the valvetrain? i've heard that i need to set the rockers(they are harland sharp 1.73 rolloers) to zero lash and turn another quarter turn. do i need to have the lifters pump up first? i am all sorts of confused, so any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks,
mike

It should not matter one way or the other. If you prime up the engine it will have oil presure right away. Now if you were runing solid lifters I would set them looser rather than tighter. this way no damage could happen.

Make sure the rocker you're adjusting is on the base circle of the cam. Tighten the rocker down until there's no up & down play in the push rod (zero lash) then go another 1/4 - 1/2 a turn more so it compresses the lifter assuming they're hydraulic. You don't need to prime the engine first. Repeat the process for each rocker by following the firing order of the motor or you can bring #1 cylinder to TDC on compression stroke then adjust #1 I & E, #7 I, #5 E, #8 I, #4 E. Then turn the crank 180 deg and adjust #5 I, #2 E, #4 I, #6 E. Then turn the crank 270 deg and finish with #2 I, #7 E, #3 I&E, #6 I, #8 E.
