I believe 2005 was the first year of the 3v.

2005 was the first year for the 3v...both 5.4 v8 and 6.8 v10 (in the SD) your dads v10 is a 2v...starting in 2005 the v10 went to 3v and did away with the 2v...hope this helps...

An easy way to tell is if the valve covers are plastic or aluminum.
Plastic = 2-valve
Aluminum = 3-valve

I like Art's way. Just gives you another chance to open your hood and be amazed at the great V-10.

Yes, and the E-series is still 2-valve, and the Excursion to the end of production was a two-valve.
According to
www.fleet.ford.com , 2006 F53 chassis got the 3-valve.
Cab/chassis E450 series (cutaway motorhome type) still has the 2-valve.
But you are absolutely correct for the F-series Superduty

now u would think to save money ford would use the same motor for everything instead of ONE MOTOR For the trucks and a nother for the vans plus all the optional motors.
how much more power does the 3v have over the 2?

As I understand it, Ford has to first redesign the E Series (stretch the nose, like the cheby's) before they can put the 3-valve in it.
