I am about to buy two kayaks, one 10 foot and one 12 foot. Not wishing to run with the back window down, on top seems the only way to carry them. I really don't want to go the route of foam blocks and straps around the truck. Anyone care to suggest what kind of rack to use? Spending all my toy money on the kayaks leaves little for the racks so I need to do this as economically as possible yet not worry about them flying off. Together they weigh about 100 lb plus any wind load. I expect once I have a rack on top I may want to carry other stuff too, plywood or lumber (stupid I know, but stupid is as stupid does and I often does..) but I think I could live with a 100 lb limit.
and.....
Is it just me or is the search function no longer as useful as it once was?
bill, i own 2 kayaks and a 79 bronco. i would suggest a thule rack with hull-a-ports. you dont want them to go flying because of an inferior rack system. you spent a lot on the yaks, why go cheap on a rack that may not stand up to the wind load from the bronco. check out http://kfs.infopop.cc/eve/forums these guys know how to transport yaks.you can ask in the forums there as well as it directly relates to kayaks. you can also call the shop there if you want to talk to a live person for assistance. good luck.

I am not so concerned with the kayaks leaving the rack as I am with the rack leaving the Bronco and or creating too much of a problem with the fiberglass top.
I can't help but think that with the hull-a-ports the first trip through the drive through bank will be exciting Do they ride better standing on edge like that or is it just a space factor?
I debated on a rack for a year. Fiberglas top damage and garage door clearance were concerns. I bought a 14 ft trailer which is much more versitile than a rack i.e. coolers, ATVs, moving, landscape mix, 20 X 20 patio cover materials, patio pavers, deer stands and feeders, feed, etc.
