Hey guys, I found me a rear end and finally was able to go pick it up yesturday. My question is, would it be easier to just try to swap out the gears or should I just change out the whole thing. I was thinking the gears because the brakes are great and I didnt want to screw them up but im not sure so im asking. thanks
You dont say which diff you have. If its a 9", you want to change the gears. (the whole center member) If you have an 8.8, it depends on your skill setting up gears.
opps my bad, its a 9" with 3.50 gears in it. Also I was just going to swap out the whole 3rd member not just the gears themselves and reuse the axles that are already in it unless they are differant.

why do you need to swap out the 3rd member? are the gears different to what your currently running?
if you lost the rear end in your current axle there could be debry or other things to cause failure of this 3rd. just replace the fluid, seals and any bearings in the 9" you just picked up and swap the brakes over one side at a time.

9 inch rear ends are NOT all the same.
F100
1957/67 9 inch rear ends came with 28 spline axles.
1968/72 9 inch rear ends came with either 28 or 31 spline axles.
9 inch rear ends from 1968/72 with 31 spline axles used either a 9 inch ring gear or a 9 3/8" ring gear.
Is there a tag on the rear end you bought?
1973 and later F100's with a 9 inch have a wider rear axle housing than the previous years and are too wide to use in pre 1957 trucks. The car rear ends will not swap into a truck.
What did the rear end come out of?

no they are the same gears, the gears in it are destroyed. When its put in 2H you can hear clanging and stuff, but the rearend I got is from a junkyard so i was thinking of just trying to swapout the 3rd members and maybe the axles if I had to..

I was going by the door tag on both trucks, they both said H2K which is the ford 9" with 3.50 gears from what Ive read, I havent found a tag on the rearend but I did double check both front axles and they both said 3.50 on them so I am assuming they are ford 9" with 3.50 gears in them.
Sorry, I'm working on a 78 Bronco, and it was a 79 ford 4x4 that the rearend came out of.
According to the H2 axle code, the 79 Ford has limited slip, the 78 Bronco doesn't have limited slip. If you are swapping rear ends, having limited slip is desirable.

Ok cool, I'll just swap the whole rearend then instead of the 3rd member and axles.
Ok, so today i was able to do a little work on the rearend. I got the old rearend out and once the new one was bolted up i noticed that the u-joints dont seem to be fitting, the ones from the bronco rearend seem to be smaller than the u-joints from the truck, is there a way i can fix this because the truck had the carrier bearing in it and the bronco doesnt and i'm useing the bronco driveshaft of course so im kinda baffled here now being that im so close to being able to get her out and start driving her.
